TAC 2013 – WEEK 1 / DECEMBER 31 TO JANUARY 6
Spanish
Study time this week: 1 hour, 15 min.
Study time in total: 1 hour, 15 min.
When doing my Spanish homework I realized how bad my grammar skills actually are, so for the first week I’ve mainly been focusing on reviewing the grammar topics we’ve gone through at school. This will probably continue through next week.
Mandarin
Study time this week: 1 hour, 5 min.
Study time in total: 1 hour, 5 min.
Weeks ago I ordered a CD with readings of the all the texts in my Mandarin textbook, but it hasn’t arrived yet. So for the first week I’ve merely been focusing on pronunciation. I’ve gone through some exercises at http://www.kinesisk1.systime.dk to get to know the four tones and how to tell them apart.
Total study time this week: 2 hours, 20 min.
Total study time in total: 2 hours, 20 min.
So I guess it turned out to be a weak start, but perhaps I just need to get used to finding time for my studies as well as returning to school after 1½ week of Christmas vacation. An old Chinese saying says “The longest journey begins with one small step”, which I guess means that the struggles of the first week still counts for something.

Not a weak start at all! It's a start and that's all that matters :-)
A really nice log. It is always great to see another Spanish learner. And I admire your
courage to start Mandarin and wish you a lot of success. I would like to learn it one day
too but I really don't have time for it now. Do you find the four tones difficult to
pronounce?

Wow, thank you so much. :)
Yeah, I guess a little studying is better than no studying at all. And I've already surpassed last week's study time and it's only Tuesday, so thinks are definitley looking brighter.
Mandarin is a difficult language on some levels, but I find the grammar to be less complicated than the grammar of the romance languages, so I guess that's a plus. The tones take some time of getting used to when it comes to pronouncing as well as listening. But I also think it's a lot of fun trying to pronounce them correctly. You'll have a good laugh at yourself! :)
The hardest part is definitely the writting system! I'm studying the first chapter of my Mandarin text book which has both pinyin and simplified Chinese characters and I'll look at them and wonder: How on Earth am I ever going to remember that?!
Keep up the good work! :)

TAC 2013 – WEEK 2 / JANUARY 7 TO JANUARY 13
Spanish
Study time this week: 30 min.
Study time in total: 1 hour, 45 min.
The excitement of finally starting Mandarin has had its consequences on the time I’ve spent on Spanish this week. I’ve listened to the first six chapters of the textbook “Mundos” and pointed out the small amount of words I didn’t know. I would try to go through about five chapters of “Mundos” each week.
Mandarin
Study time this week: 2 hours.
Study time in total: 3 hours, 5 min.
My CD arrived last Monday, so this week I was able to properly begin my Mandarin studies. I’ve gone through most of the first chapter of the textbook “Kinesisk 1” as well as the additional exercises on www.kinesisk1.systime.dk. I’ve also written my first Mandarin characters and it looks awful, but as with everything else, practice makes perfect.
Lithuanian
Study time this week: None
Study time in total: None
I’ve been going back and forth about whether I should drop Lithuanian from my list of languages due to declining motivation, limited amount of resources and the fact that I’m already studying two other languages. Then after a brief search for more online resources I was able to find a few more websites which I will add to the list of materials which can be found on page 1 on this log. A quick look at a couple of these lessons regained my interest in the language, so I’ll see if I can somehow manage to squeeze it in between Spanish and Mandarin. Wish me look.
Total study time this week: 2 hours, 30 min.
Total study time in total: 4 hours, 50 min.

Study time in total: 2 hours, 5 min.
Mandarin
Study time this week: 35 min.
Study time in total: 3 hours, 40 min.
Lithuanian
Study time this week: None (still)
Study time in total: None (still)
It sucks when life gets in the way of my studies, but this is just what happened this week. I prefer not to go into details; it’s just some personal things. I hope to find more time for studying next week.
As for this week I’ve only made it through half of the second chapter of “Kinesisk 1” and skimmed through one chapter of “Mundos”. I came to realize that the material in “Mundos”, my current Spanish textbook might be too easy. I want to begin on the other text book, I borrowed from the local library. The book is called “¿A que no?”.
For the rest of the week I’ve merely been listening to Spanish and a little Lithuanian music on YouTube. I find it a great way to become familiar with the culture of the language. I’ve also been looking around for more Lithuanian resources, but I couldn’t find anything remotely better than the stuff I already have. Now I just need to pull myself together and do some serious studying.
Total study time this week: 55 min.
Total study time in total: 5 hours, 45 min.

TAC 2013 – WEEK 4 / JANUARY 21 TO JANUARY 27
Spanish:
Study time this week: 1 hour 25 min.
Study time in total: 3 hours, 30 min.
Mandarin:
Study time this week: 30 min.
Study time in total: 4 hours, 10 min.
Lithuanian:
Study time this week: 10 min.
Study time in total: 10 min.
Total study time this week: 2 hours, 5 min.
Total study time in total: 7 hours, 50 min.
I had hoped the amound of study time in January would have been higher, but I guess it’s a start. I just have a lot of other things on my mind right now, so I suppose I should be satisfied that I at least got to study a little bit. For Spanish I’ve started on the other textbook “¿A que no?”, and I’ve gone through the first two chapters. For Chinese I finished the second chapter, but I still need to practice on the characters from both chapter 1 and 2 before I start chapter 3. For Lithuanian I’ve gone through two lessons about greetings and numbers from one of the online resources. I do hope I’ll be able to spend more time on studying in the following months. Best wishes to all.

Nice progress. It my not look like a lot of study time at the first sight, but don't let it scare you off. You did something in both your main languages every week, that is really good. I'm looking forward to reading about the weeks to come. :-)
