Hey Bakunin! I live and work in Cambodia in a 'city' called Battambang. I started learning Khmer when I arrived
and I got married about 2 and a half years after that to a Cambodian. She can speak some English but we always
speak to one another in Khmer. Khmer should be fairly straightforward if you know Thai, i'd say that it's easier to
learn Khmer after Thai because you don't have to worry about tones any more! I have a friend who is fluent in Thai
and I see a lot of similarities between certain words. Furthermore if you can write in Thai then it shouldn't take you
too long to be able to do the same in Khmer. The scripts are very similar. If you need any help with Khmer or
recommendations for materials (not that there's a lot to choose from!), then feel free to ask! Khmer is a great
language to learn and I would totally recommend it

Thanks, I might come back to your offer :) Khmer is certainly an interesting language to learn, and the Khmer
people have an amazingly rich history. Thai people tend to look down on Khmers, but they fail to see that their
culture has been shaped and enriched by Khmer culture over centuries. Good luck with your Chinese studies, I'm
looking forward to following your progress.

Not been the best couple of days as I have been super busy at work!
2/1/13 - Assimil 51 done. Second wave lesson 2 done, however, I realized that I haven't learnt all of the
characters from the earlier lessons as I have been learning from the frequency list. I am still doing the Eng - Man
translation, but now I am also learning the characters through the lessons that I haven't yet learnt. My goal at the
moment is to try and learn 20 new characters a week, both reading and writing. I am also trying to learn 100 new
words a week but I don't know if I will manage that, or how long I will be able to keep it up for. I feel like progress
is quite slow at this point, my speaking is ok but very slow as I try and get every tone spot on (I figure this is the
best way because it will help me to speak fast and clearly in the future instead of just fast). Listening is not good.
I listen to podcasts or watch a TV show in Mandarin in the evenings and I find it very hard to pick out much of what
is being said, much less make sense of what is going on! They just talk so fast!

5/1/13 - Assimil 52 done. Some new characters learnt. I have also started inputting some sentences into Anki
instead of just single words, following the AJATT method for that. Watched a movie last night with Chinese subs
and took some sentences from that to put into Anki.

I think it's cool that you've started learning characters right away. When I was learning Chinese, learning to
recognize a character and being able to type it (using the pinyin input method, for example), and learning to
handwrite it were two very different things, and the latter was much more time consuming. What are your views on
this? Do you aspire to be able to handwrite Chinese?

I totally agree. I am learning to handwrite which feels like it's taking so much longer, but it is so satisfying to
actually be able to write a few out now! I realize it is going to take me a while, but I figure it will be worth it in the
long run. Right now i'm trying to learn to write 20 new characters a week, as that will give me roughly 1000 by the
end of the year. I don't think 20 a week is a huge number, but it feels comfortable for now. If I end up learning
more then that's a bonus!

If you can learn twenty characters a week and keep them active (which requires some measure of repetition, I
guess) then this is already a great achievement! Just compare those 1000 characters per year with the rate at which
Chinese kids learn their characters. I don't have a numbers in my head, but you'll be quite competitive :)
I fully agree that it's very rewarding to write those beautiful characters by hand. Good on you, and I hope you keep
enjoying it!

9/1/12 - Assimil 54 done and the second wave. I have also decided to start doing some NPCR with the
accompanying videos on youtube just to get some more vocabulary, I started today at lesson 5 which was very
straight forward. I have ordered a big poster with all the simplified hanzi on it so I am excited about that arriving
in the next couple of weeks. Had to change my anki deck to allow me to do 30 new words a day instead of 20
because I am currently adding lots of new words and I have about 200 that still haven't come up (that is only 100
new words because I study them both ways). Still, I guess that's a better problem to have than not having enough
vocabulary!
