1/5/13 - Not much to report. Been a terrible week Chinese wise as we moved house, only managed to get done up
to Pim 22. But still I am on top of my anki decks and have been managing to get at least a small amount in every day, which I figure is better than just pounding out a few hours once a week. Still got lots to do with unpacking in our new house, so I don't have huge hopes for the next week or two, but fingers crossed after that I should have some more time! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

8/5/13 - This week has been better. Pims done up to 28, did two lessons of CME so now lesson 19 is done. One
more lesson in book two and then I can move on to book 3, and Pims is also nearly finished. I don't usually have time to do a lesson of each in one day, so when Pims is done I should be able to focus more on CME for a while, then see what happens I guess. I watched Cinderella and Pinochio both in Mandarin which was good, although I really understood very little. Anki up to date. I am now over 600 characters which is encouraging. Still struggling to force myself to speak Chinese with my wife, but I think it is becoming slightly easier. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

18/5/13 - Finished Pims and finished CME book 2. Anki all up to date. Watched a couple of animated movies in
Chinese. I have also ordered some more movies from China which are on the way, and a copy of Peter Pan with bilingual text, so I am looking forward to those arriving! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

25/5/13 - Lesson 21 of CME done, more vocab and characters into anki, and watched a Chinese movie. My
speaking seems to be improving, but listening is where I am really struggling. I think listening progress will be slow because I have hardly any Chinese input. Slowly but surely, as they say! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

3/6/13 - As I suspected the last week or so was not good for language due to being very busy. However, I did
manage to get lesson 22 of CME done, and also added more characters and vocab into anki. I am now at just over 700 characters which is cool. Hopefully this week I will have a bit more time to crack on. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

8/6/13 - This week was better for Chinese. Got lesson 23 of CME done, and also hammered my anki decks. I
realized through last months challenge that I quite use words that are not quite right, but almost right. I think the issue is I have been learning words, but often not in context, and so I am not 100% sure of how they are used. In order to deal with this problem, I have started using Jukuu to give me example sentences for new words. I am going to create a sentence for every new word (unless it is a straightforward noun), and I will also put these sentences into anki along with the new word, so that I can learn to use them in the right context. I have also set a new goal of watching at least 30 minutes of Chinese TV every day in an attempt to improve my listening. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Good luck on your Mandarin studies! I just noticed that you are living in Battambang.
My parents are from Battambang, so even though I have never been there (nor visited Cambodia), I am happy to see someone on HTLAL with a connection to the city. May I ask what books you used to learn Khmer when you were first starting out? And how long did it take before you felt comfortable speaking the language? I would love to study Khmer in the future, after I get to a decent level with Cantonese. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Thanks! So you are Khmer? When I first started out I used Colloquial Cambodian, and I also bought a copy of the
grade one book the kids use at school here to learn reading/writing. As I was learning in Cambodia I just bought a little note book and wrote down anything I didn't know as and when it came up. I started trying to talk from day one, at about 9 months I was fairly comfortable speaking Khmer, although not in specialist subjects at that point. Then after a year I was able to translate and after a couple of years I got married, and my wife and I speak Khmer to each other. I would definitely recommend the Colloquial Cambodian book, although it is a bit outdated in certain parts. Unfortunately there are no fantastic resources in my opinion, and even the dictionaries available here aren't very good. I believe it is partly due to the poor education following the Khmer Rouge regime. There are many English words that can't be directly translated. Because of this small vocabulary the language isn't too difficult to pick up quickly, but as you get better it can be difficult to express yourself, and it is noticeable how often things are misunderstood here.
