Thanks! I'll see if I can get a copy of Colloquial Cambodian next time I am in the
States. My parents are ethnically Chinese but born and raised in Cambodia. They came to
the US as refugees after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, so I was born and raised in
the US. I actually can understand and speak some "family/kitchen/baby" Khmer, but not
fluently. It's funny because I do notice there are some words my family uses in Khmer
that sound like English/French; I am not sure if they are real Khmer words or just
immigrant code-switching since my parents have been in the US for so long. It sounds
like they may be real Khmer loanwords!
I am having a lot of fun learning Cantonese. I imagine it'll be easy for you after you
learn Mandarin, so it's definitely worth adding to the hit list, even though it is much
less "useful" than Mandarin is.

Yeah there are certainly a lot of loan words taken from English/French! I struggled to put Mandarin before
Cantonese because I just love how Cantonese sounds, but I finally settled on Mandarin first because I think it would
be easier to break into a tonal language and also because of the huge amount of resources in comparison to
Cantonese.

17/6/13 - Lesson 24 of CME is done, and I also managed to stick to my goal of watching at least 30 minutes of
Chinese TV every day. I am now just over 800 characters, and my anki deck hit 2000 words a few days ago. I find
that anki reviews are taking up a significant amount of my time, but for now I am ok with that. I am going very
slowly through the CME books as I focus on listening and building up my vocabulary.

25/6/13 - Lesson 27 of CME done. Continuing to watch Chinese TV. Also trying to spend some time listening to
podcasts to help improve my listening. Still waiting for my DVDs to arrive from China so I can watch some stuff that
I know! For vocabulary I am using the new words from the CME book, and then words from the HSK2 vocab list.
Actually learnt a couple of new Khmer words this week as well which is cool.

4/7/13 - Lesson 28 of CME done. Just over 900 characters learnt now. The big 1500 character poster I bought and
stuck on my wall is filling up nicely! Hope to hit 1000 characters in the next couple of weeks which will be a
substantial milestone for me. My anki deck for vocab is at around 2200 words. I have access to a lot of vocab
through the HSK list, but it also has its drawbacks I think because there are so many similar words that I don't really
know when it is appropriate to use each one yet, and as it is done in alphabetical order I find myself learning 7
words starting with fang1, then a few with fang2 etc, and so it can be a little bit confusing. Still need to increase my
listening, as i'm hoping that more listening will help me have a better level of retention and understanding of the
new vocab I am learning (once I actually understand more of what I am listening to at least)!

12/7/13 - Lesson 29 of CME done. Bit behind on my Anki this week, going to try and catch up today and
tomorrow. Not got much done in the area of Chinese this week, however there are some Chinese guys here in
Cambodia for a couple of days and so yesterday I spent half an hour chatting with them. I couldn't understand
everything but I got the general gist of a lot of what they said, and I was able to say quite a lot of what I wanted to
get across, although it was slow and frustrating at times!
This week has been a great one for Khmer. I have found a lexicon of some new economic and business words that
have just been released which is great. On top of that I am writing a book to try and improve the language
program for foreign staff who come to Cambodia to work with us. I have no experience in this area but it's really
exciting and I am enjoying it. Today I will be recording some audio with some native speakers.

19/7/13 - Lesson 31 of CME done. Anki all up to date. Hit the 1000 character mark which is a milestone. In
some ways I am finding that learning characters is becoming easier, but in others it is harder. I find that there are
now lots of similar characters, so often if I am writing one I will miss a dot here or a line there. I'm sure this will
improve through time and repetition.
