He's certainly not as famous as in Czech Republic but I'd say that people over 30 normally know his name at least. Probably younger ones, too since he did a duet with the German rapper Bushido a couple of years ago. However, unlike in Czech Republic, in Germany most people have no idea about the variety of his songs, they put him into a certain category they don't like and when I say I'm a fan of Karel, people think I like a certain kind of music (which is not the case). They're usually astonished when I tell them that Karel has interpreted a lot of songs from famous British and American stars in Czech and is one of the best interpreters of Elvis songs. I agree that usually women are attracted to Karel (he really was a cutie in the 80's ;-)) but especially in Czech Republic I've seen a lot of men at concerts and don't think they were all forced by their wives to accompany them :-). 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I also know Karl Gott but only because of the famous Biene Maja Theme, like almost every who is 30 or

He speaks German very well, still with a slight accent but he doesn't have any problems
to find the right words and hardly ever makes a grammar mistake. Here are some links: Rock'n'Roll Medley (English) Nic nás nezastaví (duet with Gabriela Gunčiková, Czech version of "Nothing's gonna stop us now", from his latest album) Lásko, tvoje jméno je zkáza (quite classical with big orquestra and choir) Malagou když struny zvoní (Spanish rhythm and Czech lyrics) Beatles (sung in Czech, dedicated to the Beatles) Žít (one of my favourite songs, not one of his usual love songs, the video is also quite impressive) Für immer jung (This is the duet with Bushido in a live version. I'm starting the year with 4 days of more or less intensive Czech learning. I created a
new ANKI desk as my old ones are such a mess. Last year I created various desks and didn't manage to catch up with them. I also downgraded to the old ANKI version as I like it better. So today I added the first 38 words to my new Czech ANKI desk. They were all taken from the book Pražské legendy. I read the chapters "Obraz Panny Marie na Kampě" and "Dům o zlaté studny", listened to the texts a couple of times (the book comes with a CD) and looked up all unknown words so that I could orally translate the texts into German.I may do written translations tomorrow. I've so often heard and read that you should study a language using material which really interests you, so well, I think it's time to apply that concept in my Czech studies. Well, dear fellow team members, in my case that means that you will learn a lot about Karel Gott this year if you follow my log. I mean, last year I tried to watch Czech TV. However, I don't watch German TV, either. I'm neither interested in current affairs nor in movies, so it was always something I had to force me to do. But I know that I need to practise my listening skills. Takže, Karel Gott hostí radio prográm který se jmenuje Zpátky si dám tenhle film a se může to poslouchat každý neděle na radio Praha. Dneska jsem poslouchala vysilání 12. ledna 2012, které Karel věnoval Elvise Preslovi, protože Elvis narodil v 8. lednu. Mám ráda také hudbu Elvisa. Karel vyprevěl hodně o kariére Elvis a se hral písně Elvise. Někdy Elvis zpíval a někdy Karel zpíval. Když Karel zpíval anglicky "Devil in disguise" a "Love letter", myslela jsem nejdřív, že byl Elvis, ale po kratké době, všiml jsem si, že byl Karel, protože má velmi roztomilý přízvuk když zpíva anglicky. Ale jeho hlas je velmi podobný jako hlas Elvise v 70. letech. To vysiláni libílo se mi, protože rozuměla jsem všecho docela dobře. Důvod za to je, že vím hodně o životě Elvise a navíc rozumím Karla Gotta lépe než jiné lidé, protože poslouchám jeho hudbu tak často a myslím také, že mluví moc zřetelný. Full of mistakes, I presume but I need to practise :-). And I'm afraid I'm going to continue with Karel. I thought I'd try to translate the Czech texts of his songs into German and add unknown vocabulary to my ANKI desk. So today I started with the lyrics of "Být stále mlád" but had to give up on one verse. Perhaps someone could help??? Co ale jen já jich ještě nevychutnal --> don't know what to make of the pronouns here, "nevychutnal" probably means something like "he didn't like it/he didn't like the taste of it"? co všechno si slíbil a pak nevykonal --> what kind of promises he made and then didn't keep co mám ještě snů a proto ženu se dál --> I still have dreams and therefore the woman left (doesn't make sense and ženu is accusative case) za nesplněnou touhou --> something about unfulfilled dreams Oh, by the way, I'm also working on a Memrise course which lists the 1,000 most common Czech words. For fun, I'll try to give you a few pointers from those sentences. The Guardian Angels can then come and tidy up if needs be. I'm not sure about the "co" in a couple of the sentences, because it depends on what came before and how the song started etc. I've tried to translate it to correct English, rather than translating each word. Co ale jen já jich ještě nevychutnal - (the line before would help with understanding exactly what he's saying here) "so many of which only I still haven't enjoyed". "vychutnat" means enjoy usually. "ochutnat" means "to taste". "jich" means "of them" and in this context, it really emphasises how many he hasn't enjoyed. co všechno si slíbil a pak nevykonal - "everthing he promised to himself but didn't carry out." So you were on the right lines here. co mám ještě snů a proto ženu se dál - "..I still have (many) dreams and that's why I keep pushing myself on". "Ženu se" is from the verb "hnát se"! Obviously it's perfectly understandable that you would think it means "woman". "Hnát se" literally means "chase yourself", but in this and most contexts it means to push yourself on and keep trying. za nesplněnou touhou - (again without context it's quite difficult, but you're more or less right) "for unfulfilled longing/desire". The "for" is the problem here, because there could be other possibilities, depending on the context. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

my understanding the part starting with "co" doesn`t really refer to the one before. Goodness, I hadn't even considered it could be a verb, so it's no surprising that the line didn't make any sense to me.
