Pozdrav z Turnova! I arrived two hours ago and am staying at a small hotel. Well, and unlike in big cities where receptionist almost instantly switch to German or English, the woman who works here sticks to Czech. She explained to me that I have to lock the front door when I come back after 11:00 pm, I asked for the internet password and ordered my dinner and something to drink in Czech. Then we even had a short conversation because she mentioned that it's very rare that a hotel guest from a foreign country addresses her in Czech and so I told her a little why I'm learning it. Now I'm definitively motivated again, a bit of immersion really works wonders :-).

I'm back on lang-8 because I think I need to practice my writing. I've got a premium account now so that I can write entries in all of my target languages. I've written two short entries in Czech so far and had them corrected. I wrote a short text about my stay in Brazil in the 1990's and translated a German text about the former German pope Benedikt XVI. Lots of mistakes, of course but it's really helpful that I can download a pdf file with my original text and the corrections. This will hopefully help me to analyze my mistakes and avoid the same ones in the future.

The 6WC is going well but this time I'm not logging a lot of Czech hours as I spend much time on my other target languages, too.

Hi nuriayasmin

I've only just read your last 2 messages, somehow I managed to miss the second to last one.

I'm glad you seemed to get good exposure to Czech and that it gave you new motivation for the language. When are you next planning to visit?

EDIT: Did you and Cavesa ever start those skype sessions that you were planning?

I'm currently in Prague. Before, I spent a week in the south of Bohemia, at lake Lipno. Also made a day trip český Krumlov. It's the first time I'm in the Czech Republic with my daughter (otherwise I couldn't have gone for fore then 4 or 5 days). Unfortunately she doesn't like it at all and we have a lot of arguments. But that's another story.

I managed to speak some Czech but I realized that it's almost impossible when someone speaks fluently German. For example, I start to speak Czech, the waitress notices I'm German (because I speak to my daughter), switches to German and then I feel stupid when I try to continue with my limited Czech. I mean, ordering something at a restaurant, asking for directions and such kind of things work out pretty well and when people speak slowly, I usually understand their answers, too. I wish I were one of those outgoing persons who just insisted on speaking Czech and telling people: "Hey I'd like to pratice, plese help me".

As far as Cavesa and me are concerned, we haven't started any Skype lessons yet. I also gave up two of my other Skype teachers, with the exception of one. I'm afraid, I really need to feel comfortable with the grammar and basic words before conversations with natives are really helpful for me, otherwise they often turn out to be a frustration. For example, that Slovenian teacher I was working with for a while, I hardly understood him at all and just nooded. Then he often switched to English which was easy to understand but also a frustration because I paid for a Czech lesson after all and should have tried to write it down. Well, partly my fault, I should have said something. Okay, enough confessions for today.

My apologies, my life has been busy during the last month but I seem to have finally found some reasonable way through it.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with natives immediately switching to German. I think it would help if you simply told them you want to practice your Czech but without that information, they have no idea anyone would willingly learn and use our totally worthless language and they just try to earn their money by being helpful :-(

Well, I need to move my German s well for the Skype exchange :-)

How old is approximately your daughter? What all does she hate here? :-D
It's true I wouldn't choose Lipno for a holiday too but that is just a matter of personal taste. I think the strength of the Czech Republic lies in the city and towns, perhaps in the mountains as well. So, what does she hate so much?

Just a few associations leading to Czech vocab and idioms that might be interesting for you:

Chcípnul tady pes. =It's boring here, nothing is happening.
Je tu nuda. = It's boring here.
povodně = floods

Today looking for a word in my Czech dictionary I realized that they were very little Czech words starting
with ’e’ (only two pages in a big dictionary, around 200 words). I was quite surprised when I discovered
that around 90% of these words starting with the letter ‘e’ have been brought in Czech from French (from
Latin/Greek origin). I think this is a useful hint, because if you speak any romance language (French,
Spanish, Italian…) or English, you can start using ‘e’ words in Czech with confidence :)
Energie, element, elegantní, elastický, ekologista, ekonomie, esej, esence, edice, elektrikář, empirický,
emocionální, etymologie, entuziasmus….

I know ekolog, ekologie, ekologický. Ekologista sounds Spanish to me.

But it's possible about the words startint with e, even though I think most came directly from Latin without the French included in the process. After all, Latin was the main language of science and literature until the 17th century or so in whole Europe.
