Welcome to my very first TAC log!
I am participating in this year's TAC with the Asian Team/ Team Crane/ 鶴
I am participating as both a 'regular' participant for Japanese and as a 'godfather'
for Korean.
This last part really simply means that Team Crane, if you have any questions about
Korean in the learning process, just ask me and we can talk it through! I am not a
native Korean speaker, but I've been studying it for quite a while and am confident
that I can help you out with most of your questions related to learning the language!
I will be participating in team activities and challenges with my Japanese.

Okay, so after a really busy week, in which I found out that I may be moving to Rwanda
in the next month, I can finally get around to setting my goals and study methods
clearly!
This year is divided into 2 languages, Korean and Japanese. I am good at Korean but not
good at Japanese. Most of my Korean study will be focused on acquiring political and
economic, very specific vocabulary that I may have use for in my job, as well as on
keeping up a healthy regime of reading and listening. Most of my Japanese study will be
getting me acquainted with most basic grammar, getting as much practice in as possible
in speaking and writing.
Japanese
I will be using the following materials and methods
-Tutoring
-Grammar study through various websites like tanos.co.uk
-Dramas and shows (I'm starting to be able to understand a little!)
-"Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese"- this is a nice textbook that I have
been using and will continue to use
-Writing
I will be following a weekly regime:
-Go through ~4 hours of tutoring/talking
-One chapter, or a bit less, of textbook study
-Further sentence-based study of grammar points and vocabulary through JLPT websites
-Watching dramas and TV shows (relaxing time)
-Upkeep two Anki decks: one for words, one for sentences
-Keep a personal journal, in which I write something, anything, every day (I'm thinking
of maybe putting this up as postings on Lang8)
Korean
Korean is going to be more straightforward, because there is a lot to build on.
I will be following a monthly regime:
-1+ books
-60+ Newspaper articles
-20+ hours of TV news
-(It would be great if I also started writing my thoughts on the news, or started up a
blog on international development in Africa in Korean, but I'm already planning to do
that for English, and let's face it, I would do like a month of it before quitting, and
then just feel bad about it).
So there it is. Japanese is going to be a very segmented, active, short and hopefully
exciting repetition of experiences! Korean is going to be slightly more longterm, and I
will eventually need to find a good way to keep up/work on my speaking fluidity. But I
have put off learning Japanese for years, always saying that my Korean was too weak,
that I would start sucking at it. There is no real danger of that anymore, and besides,
I can always learn Japanese and come back to more focused practice of speaking Korean
or something. Or I could have a month in the middle where I switch it up or
something...

January
Korean
On schedule!
I gave myself an extra assignment for this month: I have an Anki deck of professional-
level Korean expressions that I have picked up from thesis research or from the news; I
only have 286 sentences though, so by the end of the month I want to get up to 500!
Japanese
Week 2
Goals:
-Look up some key words that my tutor keeps saying
-Catch up on Anki reviews
-Look up and collect sentences on grammar (especially ことになる。ようになる)
-Keep watching 学校じゃ教えられない (possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen,
but entertaining still)
-Listening for the 読み物 of Chapter 6 of my textbook
-***Finally put up my introduction on the team page in Japanese!!***

Moving to Rwanda sounds exciting! Will you be dabbling in the local language a bit?
As far as Korean writing goes, if you plan to post anything in your log I look forward to reading it!

Hello fellow Team 鶴 member!
Sounds like a very good schedule, you should start seeing some very good results with that. As druckfehler says, moving to Rwanda sounds fascinating.
Best of luck for 2013!

Rwanda does sound exciting! Sounds like you have a good plan of attack for your two
languages. I hope we can all help to keep each other on track. Good luck to you and I'm
excited to follow your progress.
