In addition to Darstini's suggestion, I also would like to add "Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik". It is still detailed, and more user friendly to beginners. It has some exercises (no key though, I don't think) but it is not really a workbook so much as a reference book, but if you are looking for teaching yourself, by studying it in sections I've found success so far. I haven't worked all the way through it yet (in fact I don't even bother with the exercises, I make up my own), and when I go to Germany, I think I'll take the Hammer and leave this one behind--if I've finished it--but it is still yet another possibility for those seeking a reference.

I started out teaching myself German using the book and tape set of "Hugo's German in Three Months". After going through that a couple of times (three months, incidentally, as it turned out), I got the fourth edtions of Hammer's and read it straight through in about nine months.

Is "Hugo's German in Three months" a good book? I was wondering what the difference between this book and "Hugo German - complete course"?

The complete courses contain the beginner's "Three Months" and also the "Advanced" courses.

Andy.
