My current languages:
French: large literature, strong influence on English, and widely spoken.
Latin: I'm a classical and medieval history buff so there's a lot I'm interested in here.

Between French and Latin I also can get some idea of how the Romance languages evolved
and lay a good base for Spanish and Italian.

Others that I've dabbled in and will probably return to:
Classical Greek: given my historical interests this one's a good choice.
German: a lot of secondary historical sources and linguistics references are in German.

I think usefulness is a important factor.
I would choose languages which are important in the whole world. Or It is important for me(maybe beacause i want to live in X conutry in the future.)

Then, if a languege is similar to one of the languege that I already know, I will find it more interesting(Not because there are probably more easy, but because they are related, the culture and the history of thoses coutries are related)
Por example, I speak chinese, and for me, Japanese and Korean are much more atractive than Hindi.

Finally, I would consider the difficulty, of course.
Korean is easier than Japanese, even Japanes if more useful and popular.
So probable I will learn Korean.

I didn't choose Norwegian and English.

I chose German because my junior high school didn't offer French or Spanish.
I chose Spanish because it Spain was cheaper to live in than France.
I chose Indonesian because I stumbled upon the country while backpacking.
I chose Russian because it is my exotic neighbor in the east.

I chose Spanish because I live in Florida and it's almost impossible to get a job without
some type of intermediate/advanced Spanish speaking ability. Plus it's a pretty language
and useful for travel.

I chose French because I'm pretty much a Francophile and I love all things French. It's a
BEAUTIFUL language and I dream of someday living in Paris.

I chose English because is the world's lingua franca and because is the only foreign language taught here in Colombia.
I chose Portuguese because is pretty similar to Spanish and I guess will be easy to learn.
I chose German because have a relatively easy pronuciation and I've heard is useful for engineers... also I asked for help here and most of the users suggested me that one.

Why did I choose my target languages?

1. English: I had no choice because my family moved to the USA and I went to the American school there.

2. Latin: I had the choice between Latin and French at school and my parents recomended me to take Latin.

3. French: I myself wanted to learn another modern language at school.

4. Ancient Greek: Was offered to me at school and I was curious about the different alphabet.

5. Dutch: There was a cable TV pilot project with "Nederland 1" and I thought I could pick up the language by watching TV.

6. Italian: There was a university course offered.

7. Spanish: This language was also offered to me at university.

8. Esperanto: There is an Esperanto-group in my city and I found somebody to give me private lessons.

9. Turkish: There are 25,000 Turks living in my city and I am a regular customer in Turkish shops.

10. Danish: I visited Danmark in 2003 and got interested in the language and Scandinavia in general.

One thing determines my desire to study a language: interest. If you find a language interesting, you will work at it. All I then do is decide what level I wish to learn it to. But interest is the key

Practicality dictates language selection for me.
Where I live and where I intend to live, that's about it. And so that covers Japanese and Korean.
