I looked around a bit and I don't see Duolingo being mentioned often on the forums lately. I've been using it for French and it's been pretty handy, but I'm curious to hear other people's opinions on it. Have you tried it? Was it useful? How far did it take you?
Cheeeeers.

I tried it for Italian & Spanish. If I hadn't done Assimil, it would have been great for me to start with. So when I tried it after Assimil, it was way too boring and slow for me.
If I wanted to re-learn German or try Portuguese, I'd definitely start with it then Assimil. It uses all of the basic vocab that one would find in a beginner's textbook or uni class, but not in Assimil.

I used it intensively for a couple of months, but I eventually got too bored and frustrated. Curiously, for a site that has ambitions to be a universal translator, it's translations in the lessons are just too horrible.
That said, it was a lot of fun for a while, I'd definitely recommend trying it.

I'm going to wait till less-commonly learned languages show up. I tried German but it is still boring.

I'm currently using it for some light Spanish revision and a bit of a dabble in German. I quite like the gaming aspect of it, but there are things that are frustrating (some of the English translations are pretty awkward). I wouldn't use it as the heart and soul of my language studies, but it's a pretty cool supplement.

I use it for Italian but like the others can find it incredibly tedious. That said, it's handy for practicing the different forms of words and conjugations of verbs.
Good when you've got a spare 10-15 minutes on the computer, but not amazing.

It's a good concept, and I used it for both German and French but I find the phrases used awkward and impractical.
Also you can only study what they want you to and sometimes the lessons, up to 15-17 per concept, get too
daunting to complete.

I enjoyed it whilst it was still novel, but I agree, I really didn't like that I wasn't getting proper feedback from my
translations, and only what people thought 'looked right'. However, it did give me some basic vocabulary in
Portuguese, so there's good points and bad.
