I love Mandarin - but like the previous poster I didn't really appreciate it until I studied it. Sometimes the tendency to repeat syllables (sheishei) can sound really cool with the right tones.

I like Japanese - as a female can I say that some male Japanese actors have extremely sexy, commanding voices. Exhibit A, Toshiro Mifune.

Farsi is also growing on me. It is surprisingly "soft" sounding (I don't know why I'm surprised at this, because I don't know what I was expecting). It's kind of throaty, but soothing.

This makes me think of my musical experience. I used to play bass and obviously I was learning songs I loved. But the more I was playing a song and learning it part by part the more it came to loose its beauty and to make me feel indifferent. It might be the same for languages. At first you hear with your feelings and your ears but then you have to think and from this moment you start hearing words, grammar and your thoughts instead of sounds and melodies. At least it is so in my case. I don’t like the sound of French, I used to love the sound of Canadian English but now that I’ve heard Australian English I would definitely like to learn this accent instead of the Canadian one. I love the sound of German as it is clear, low-pitched not too fast…

But the English spoken in Australia provides the greatest sounds to my ears.

For me, Norwegian is immensely pretty. I am primarily more familiar with bokmål than nynorsk. But, for example, when watching Norwegian movies, I often concentrate more on hearing the language than reading the subtitles. I studied Norwegian on my own when I was a teenager, and I still think it's one of the most beautiful spoken languages I've ever heard.

Hungarian!

It unites evrything into the right mixture: harmony, rythm and the right alternation between vowels and consonants.

It sounds manly without being guttural or jarring, pleasant and soft without appearing effeminate.

Actually it is a pity I am learning it because it takes away from the prettiness as it is perceived by the uninitiated ear.

I think Mandarin would be my pick, and it's the main reason I'm trying to learn it (kind of on the back burner right now though). I despise the sound of French, although I may eventually learn it for travel purposes. I'm a big fan of any Germanic language, really, and I also like Finnish.

In my opinion, the most beautiful languages are Finnish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Norwegian, Arabic, Japanese, Danish, Icelandic and Italian.
