Congratulations!! For passing 3급, but even more for getting the scholarship! That sounds absolutely
exciting! And like a huge challenge, too, but I'm sure you can do it. You're already improving at a rather fast pace and add to that 12 months of intensive Korean lessons... The rest of us won't be able to keep up :) Glad to see the challenge helped so much with TOPIK. I'm really happy with this website... after being a casual language nerd for the last 15 years or so, these forums have really increased my motivation and, well, nerdiness, in the best possible way! I don't think I'd be reading French books and going to graduate school in Korean if not for the opportunity to read other peoples' accounts of learning, and struggling, with languages! Consistent (active) listening practice has definitely kicked up my comprehension a notch. Now I need to find the motivation to get back into my routine of listening to 10-30 minutes of Korean every day... 5월 28일부터 6월 10일까지 Korean - Ewha 4 (5 vocab words) - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire vol. 2: 90-180 - TTMIK Iyagi #140-143 - talked with assorted friends/taxi drivers French - Deux fois n'est pas coutume by Janet Evanovich: 211-317 (finish) - À la une, à la deux, à la mort by Janet Evanovich: 1-45 - Le journal en français facile: 11 It's been an eventful last few weeks, during which I've gone to Seoul, had a few holidays, got sick and lost my voice, and met a few friends for coffee/talking in Korean. I had to cancel tutoring a few times (only made it to 1/4 classes, which is a new record low for me, sigh). I only have 1.5 months left with my tutor before I leave for my next big adventure. I'm going to try hard to attend every class because, obviously, it's quite useful. My reading skills in Korean have improved a lot. A lot, a lot. 10 pages is no big deal anymore, and my comprehension level seems to have shot up suddenly. I am tempted to try to read 12 pages a day but I'm not sure yet. I'll make the increase soon, although probably not this week. As I mentioned before I need to find the motivation to sit down with a Korean TV show/reality show/podcast and just listen. I'm able to follow people's conversations on the street, so I'm probably at the right level to dive into media... again. I've been reading a lot of English books lately though, and watching TV/movies or listening to anything doesn't sound very fun. I'll try to convince myself to buck up and do it. I'm also considering picking up translating passages from Harry Potter. It would be a good way to spend 5 extra minutes a day learning new words or grammar in a slightly more active way. Korean - Ewha 4: 95 words - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire vol. 2: 181-240 - TTMIK Iyagi: #144 (끝!!!) - TTMIK Interview: #1 - 괴담레스토랑: 1-4 - hung out with assorted friends French - À la une, à la deux, à la mort by Janet Evanovich: 46-135 - Le journal en français facile: 6 This has been a very good study week. I've learned a lot of very useful vocabulary, and I've even remembered some of it! The big news for the week is that I learned where my language school for the next year will be. I'll be in 전주. It's not quite as big of a change as I was hoping for (전라도에 4년반 동안 살아서 다른 지방에 이사하고 싶었고 전주에 가 본 적이 있어서요...), but it's pretty awesome regardless. Of course, depending on how I do in my language course, I may not need to stay there for the full year... but I'll try not to get ahead of myself. Having seen what good daily listening practice has done for my Korean skills, I've started to try to do more of it. I've finished the Iyagis. I could probably go back and get more out of them - vocabulary, maybe work on my grammar or translation skills - but at the moment I feel like moving forward. I tried out the TTMIK interview series, but only the first one had a transcript available and I didn't particularly enjoy it, so I decided to just suck it up and dive into 자막 없는 native content. A few weeks ago one of my students mentioned the animation 괴담레스토랑 (Thriller Restaurant). Since the entire series is available on YouTube I decided to dive in. It's a fantasy/horror cartoon which, as I just discovered, was imported from Japan. Sure, it's intended for kids, but it's quite good - it has some particularly scary segments, the vocabulary is at a good level, and the voices aren't particularly strange, which I find unusual for a cartoon. Best of all: it's only about 18 minutes per episode, with 3 segments: the "starter" (7-8 minutes), the "main course" (7-8-9 minutes), and the "dessert" (1-2 minutes). Not only is the show a great length, the segments are perfect if you only have 10 minutes free here and there. There are no subtitles, but that's not a bad thing. I am a little sad that 괴담레스토랑 only has 23 episodes, but it looks like there are a ton of similarly short animations available on YouTube. For the sake of comparison: Sogang 4A resulted in 523 cards after 8 chapters. Ehwa 4 has given me 446 words in (roughly) 3.25 chapters. Admittedly, I'm including vocabulary that comes up during tutoring in this count, but overall I'm getting much more out of Ehwa than Sogang. Unfortunately I'll have to switch to a completely new series in September - my language school seems to use the Yonsei books. 괴담레스토랑 is still going well. I don't know if my listening comprehension is improving at all - I'm sure it is - but the show is entertaining and in Korean, so I'll take what I can get. French is the same as usual. Reading (in both languages, to be honest) has become much simpler, possibly because I'm getting used to how the series is written. I should probably start watching a French TV show or switch to the regular news. French isn't even remotely the priority Korean is at the moment however. Now for some wanderlust. Since I'm going to be studying Korean literature, I should probably work on either Mandarin or Japanese sometime soon. Or possibly just suck it up and study Hanja. My focus is modern Korean lit, so Japanese might be a good choice if I want to study Zainichi writers, but if I'd like to make myself a bit more marketable (... as marketable as someone with a Korean Lit degree could get), I may want to focus on Mandarin and/or Hanja so I can study classical literature. I guess I should focus on Hanja before starting Mandarin, and making the jump to Japanese sometime after that. Of course, I still have dreams of speaking Portuguese and getting my Russian back to where it was in university, but they're just going to have to take the backseat for now. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Also, I sometimes just see the book sitting on the table and think, "I should read a couple pages." I may be getting to the point where it's not studying but actually reading for fun. A few weeks ago I decided to start taking 1 day off a week. No working out, no studying, just a mental and physical break day. I think it's one of the best ideas I've had in the last year. Studying daily is definitely a good way to improve your language skills, but I find that if you don't take the occasional break you just get tired and fed up. 공부를 식상하고 싶지 않아서 가끔 쉬운 날이 있으면 좋겠어요... On a related topic, for the longest time I found it difficult to delete old Anki decks. Sogang 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4A, 2000 Essential Korean Words, Yonsei 1, Yonsei 2... I've never found Anki to be troublesome but it was genuinely difficult to break away from those old decks - what if I forget something? Am I wasting the hours I spend inputting and reviewing cards? I finally realized that if I didn't know the vocabulary by the end of the textbook I wasn't going to learn it through Anki. These days I delete my old decks roughly 3 or 4 months after I've finished the corresponding textbook. I'm down to Ehwa 4 and Yonsei Reading 3 at the moment (the textbook for which I don't actively use at the moment, but I'm hesitant to delete the deck because I will be using the Yonsei books starting from September). It's a nice feeling to delete a deck. It feels like a new start - knowledge learned and packed away. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

No big deal. Over the weekend I went up to 전주, visited my language school, and hung out with a friend (송별회 때문에 - 그 분이 유럽에 여행하러 가요 ㅠㅠ). He speaks very fast Korean, in heavy dialect. I'm not going to say I understand every word he says when he talks, because that would be a lie. It's like there's a brief delay in comprehension - maybe 5 seconds later I think, "Oh yeah, that's what he's saying!" He's also capable of slowing down his speech without dumbing down what he's saying - a rare skill. I watched the last episode of 괴담레스토랑 today. It's actually a very fun, sometimes genuinely scary cartoon. I recommend it if you'd prefer bite-sized bits of native content to dramas. I'm studying roughly 2.5 hours a day, with the exception of Sundays, which I take off. This is on top of working 8-4:30 every day, and it's also report card/final exam season, so I've been busier than normal. I'm not sure what changed, but I like it. Harry Potter has started to become less of a chore and more fun to read. It's downright easy to read these days. My daily reading limit is officially 12 pages a day but I've been doing at least 14 instead. I'd like to finish 불의 잔 before I move at the beginning of August. This might be a pipe dream, but maybe... Having finished 괴담레스토랑 I asked my students for other cartoon recommendations. 장금이의 꿈 was unanimously chosen as the best, so I started watching it on YouTube. I... don't really like it, to be honest. The main character is sickeningly earnest and sweet and always saves the day. Gross. I'm going to try to finish the cartoon and then I'll start on my students' other recommendations: 검정고무신, 놓지마 정신줄, and 명탐정 코난. Also, I've made a change in my French study routine for the first time in months. I've started to watch 20 minutes of Kaamelott every day, using these transcripts. The speech is quite fast but the show is entertaining and I understand what's happening if I use the transcripts. I'll try to keep it up until I don't need transcripts anymore.
