Absolutely, making lively dialogues in terms of learning them by heart and practising them orally is successful. This is how we used to memorize new foreign vocabularies in early years at schools.

Let the challenge begin!

So far we have three subscribers and their assignments:

Expugnator
Write a total of 100 dialogues/short stories distributed through the following languages:
30 Georgian dialogues
30 Norwegian dialogues
30 French dialogues
10 Chinese dialogues

kujichagulia
Write a total of 30 Japanese dialogs/short stories/islands* by March 4th, 2014
Write a total of 15 Portuguese dialogs/short stories/islands* by March 4th, 2014

BarronBill
* 50 dialogues/monologues/islands in Spanish by 2/1/2013
* 50 dialogues/monologues/islands in German by 2/1/2013

Completion date is March 4th, but anyone is free to finish off earlier and even propose a
remaining challenge. New challengers are welcome anytime, as long as they believe the
remaining time will be enough for accomplishing their tasks.

It would be nice to have feedback from people who try this challenge. For example, if you
are posting at correction sites, how useful ar the corrections being? Are native speakers
aware of the register you mean to use, of your attempt to sound natural?

I'm not exactly sure how to post updates here, but here goes. Since the challenge began last week, I have written three Japanese dialogues (27 to go) and 1 Portuguese dialog (14 to go). I posted all of them at Lang-8.

With my Japanese writings, corrections at Lang-8 come pretty quickly. I usually have two or three corrections within 12 hours of posting something. If I wait a little longer, I can get four or five. It is pretty easy to establish if a dialogue in Japanese is casual or formal, so the correctors are able to help me sound more natural depending on the situation. I've made some friends, and over time they understand the type of mistakes I commonly make, so they can easily understand what I try to say.

With my Portuguese writing, corrections do not come as fast, but I did get a few corrections on my one writing. However... my writing must have been fabulous, because very little was corrected.

Update:

Completed 8 monologues in German. Had them checked by a native speaker friend and only one needed revision to sound more natural.

Completed 3 Islands in Spanish. Had them checked by a native Spanish speaking friend. All 3 needed revisions of verying degrees.

Still plugging away, but may be running low on ideas... maybe a thread to discuss could be in order.

Well-done guys! That's the spirit! It is ok to report here once in a while. I'm rather
busy at work and didn't have time for output, only input. Today I wrote my first
dialogue, it was in French. Still waiting for corrections.

I try to write about anything at all that happens to me or that I intend to do. That is,
I try not to dumb down my thoughts in order to make up for my shortage of vocabulary in
the target language. I try to think in a complex way just like in my native language,
even if that means that this time I'd be rather translating thoughts. That would still be
an input exercise, anyway.

This is a great idea, especially as I'm trying to look for ways to be more active with my language.

My goal is for 50 monologues and islands in German by March 4, 2014.

Good then, Fünf Katzen! Good luck with your challenge!

(I have yet to read that book in order to understand the concept of 'islands'. The
thing is that reading in English is absolutely low priority for me).

So, updating the subscriptions:

Write a total of 100 dialogues/short stories distributed through the following
languages:

30 Norwegian dialogues
30 French dialogues
10 Chinese dialogues

I'm a bit falling behind at this challenge. If I keep at this rythm, I won't be able to
reach my goal before March. I usually go writing when I'm done with all the input tasks,
so by this time I'm usually tired. So far, I'm managed to write 2 dialogues in Norwegian,
1 in French, 1 in Georgian and none in Mandarim. I believe Mandarin might be easier than
I expect, because most textbooks are about dialogues all the time, so it's just a matter
of trying. There's always the risk of writing something unintelligible a native won't
even be able to correct, but I have to overcome this fear now.
