@Chung: thanks for your common and the pointer. Somehow I expected such an answer, so I'm not too disappointed. Still, for English, exposure tends to make the learner get the general meaning of phrasal verb particles, so that newly encountered once can be almost readily understood. I hope that at some point one can develop such a feeling for verb prefixes in Polish as well.

It's also similar in Hungarian with its prefixed verbs and I've had similar difficulties when studying it. The worst part about these Hungarian verbs is that the perfective-like sense of a prefixed verb can be marked by one of a few prefixes.
E.g.
olvasni "to read"
elolvasni "to read [to completion]" (el- ~ "away")
menni "to go"
bemenni "to go into" (be- ~ "into")
elmenni "to go out/away" (el- ~ "away")
oldani "to solve" [I don't think that is very common]
megoldani "to solve" [more common, and the meaning has a perfective nuance to it since by definition, the resolution of a problem implies completion] (meg- ~ [implies completion] cf. meg "and, plus")
feloldani "to declassify" (fel- ~ "up")
If you're not a native speaker, something like megolvasni as a perfective counterpart to olvasni may sound idiomatic. The truth is that Hungarians use elolvasni in this sense. Megolvasni is an archaic variant of elolvasni, and it's more suitably translated or understood now as "to count [money]".
It's a bit frustrating but exposure as you mention is probably the best way to get a handle on the apparent lack of a simple rule to determine which prefix to use when deriving prefixed verbs.

So here is my attempt at the first team task. I didn't use a dictionary or refer to a grammar book, because I wanted to learn from my mistakes and really test myself. Obviously the sentences are very simple, because I had a very limited amount of vocabulary to choose from. I guessed some of the grammar forms and wasn't sure about some of the spellings either so there are plenty of mistakes for someone to correct if they're willing. I'll be very grateful if they do.

I've allowed myself to correct you:
Mam na imię Duan. Mieszkam w Kanadzie. Mam trzydzieści pięc lat i uczę się języka
polskiego od ponad dwóch lat. W ostatnim roku/W ciągu ostatniego roku byłem w Polsce dwa razy. Trochę rozumiem polski,
ale chciałbym rozumieć lepiej. Mam żonę i dwoje dzieci, syna i córkę. Byćmoże
dostaniemy psa na kilka miesięcy/Być może3 dostaniemy psa zakilka miesięcy. Lubię czytać, podrózować i jeżdzić rowerem.
na kilka miesięcy - for a few months
za kilka miesięcy - in time of a few months, after few months
"Trochę rozumiem polski" sounds a little bit weird to my ears, but I haven't found a better way to say it, so...
