Big Summary
I managed to read 45 books - my target was 50, so that is noticeably short, but less
short than last year. I shall try again in 2015.
22 of these books were in languages other than English or German - again, need to up
my game a little, but success is in view. Also, I'm proud that these cover a wide
variety of languages: Spanish, Indonesian, Chinese, Dutch, Greek, Italian, French and
Esperanto.
In terms of hours, I outdid by goal: I studied 749 hours instead of the target
>700. Will take 750 hours as my goal next year, citius altius fortius.
My distribution of hours by language is as follows:
French 159.5
Mandarin 348.91
Greek 53.25
Swahili 4.16
Italian 27.75
Dutch 28.76
Japanese 2.33
Spanish 39.16
Arabic 1.08
Swedish 3.25
Indonesian 59.81
Misc 21.25 (includes 5 hours of Hebrew, my new target language)
Mandarin was by far the most because I took some classes at Dalarna University online,
including a course in Modern Chinese Literature and one in Chinese Linguistics. These
required a lot of work and required me to improve my Chinese.
My biggest successes this year
- Doing my first Chinese Powerpoint presentation - and 7 more
- Passing a mock HSK 5 (C1) exam for Chinese
- Developing true comfort in French, an epiphany
- Launching the LearnYu.com beta and collecting $10k in crowdfunding
- Being active in TEJO, including attending a conference of young EU & African
leaders, organizing local courses, teaching an AMO training session on web 2.0, and
getting elected as komitatano C on the last day of the year
- Organizing the Polyglot Workshop with Richard Simcott and Alex Rawlings
- Making the Polyglot Gathering such a roaring success that the 2015 event already
has 177 signups
I regret not doing more for my other languages, some really got the short end of the
stick, but I am happy with the overall result: greatly improving two languages and
keeping the others at least at the level they were before, with minor improvements in
distinguishing Italian and Spanish for example.
My next goal will be Hebrew. I will study it intensively as part of the Add1Challenge
and I'm hoping to develop good study habits through it. My new log is already
available at

Thanks for reading! The knowledge that some people are out there reading this log
really kept me going a few times. I wish you all a very successful year 2015!
