I mostly agree with Ari, but this also depends on the reason for the bad accent. Much like those who move abroad will pick up the local accent, if someone's accent is bad due to hearing mostly non-native speakers, exposure to a better role model will help them improve. In this sense shadowing is as useful as other activities involving recordings of native speakers.

You've had a negative experience with shadowing on accent formation?
(edit: I'm replying to the post before the one above)

Simply no evidence that it is positive.

Sure. But Serpent says it's positively the wrong way, or a useless way, of
improving accent.
And this guy's English accent is very good:

Um, I didn't say so. I think it's great under certain circumstances. Like if you've heard non-natives a lot or if your speaking skills are minimal and you're aiming to develop a decent accent from scratch. If you've had good role models and your accent remains bad, shadowing probably won't help.

You said that it wasn't useful for accent improvement (implying "useless"), which also
amounts to saying that it's the "wrong way" if accent improvement is one of your goals.
But have you actually tried shadowing yourself and observed its effects on accent
formation?

I've done a lot of shadowing, yes. It's one of my favourite methods/techniques, and I think it's a decent way to become the best you. But going beyond that requires something more drastic.

At what point did you realize that shadowing had limits to accent formation, and that
additional shadowing would not help your accent better than other methods? And what were
those methods? (Sorry to interrogate you - here I'm earnest in my interest)
