No idea. According to my mother she just realised one day when I was 5 that I spoke English. Not fluently, mind you, but speaking nonetheless. I remember being about that age and neither reading fast enough to keep up with subtitles nor understanding quite enough to keep up with dialogue written for grown-ups.
