Thanks, was that intensive study or just half an hour to an hour each day? I'm very
curious, as my friend is learning
Dutch at the moment :-) |

Well, I was living in the Netherlands the whole time so it was partially immersion,
partially self study and also some formal study at a university. I will add that my
passive listening skills were at B2 level after about 2 years so that went a lot quicker.

Started learning for real at 27 years old (French). Not counting the Spanish classes in high school.

When I was five my best friend lived next door to me. Her mother was American and her
father, Ecuadorian. I remember him teaching us how to count in Spanish. But, since there
was little follow-up for many years, I guess it doesn't count. :)
I won't count French because I don't consider it a foreign language.
The first foreign language I studied was probably Italian which I studied in high school
at age 18.

Well, my poor old brain cells were 48 years old when I introduced them to the wonderful world of Polish. Four years later and they've just about got over the shock.

Polish is very interesting, quite a few people I know speak it as a native language. I tried to teach it to myself when I
was about 9 or 10 but I gave up as it was too hard for my brain to comprehend at a young age. I do know a few
sentences
in Polish and basic pleasantries. How's your
learning going?

It's going well (I think! - I have virtually no previous language learning experience to compare it with). I've had to be more persistent that I initially thought, but the rewards have been great. And as you say, there are a lot of opportunities to speak it in the UK, which is another source of motivation.

Indeed, I am from the UK too and my parents have a few Polish friends as well so if I decide to learn Polish in the
future I'll be able to have lots of practise :D
