That's my goal, although I'm rather lousy at learning languages, so they may be a tall order :p

I think I'd have to pick:

(English)

German - some consider my German to be pretty advanced, but it's not advanced enough for my liking, so it stays on my list :)

Russian

Mandarin

Modern Greek

Italian

If German were in the first list with English, I'd have to pick Finnish as my last one.

It is interesting to compare my choices from last year with my present thinking. They haven't changed much. The Mandarin would possibly be replaced with Japanese and in the second bit, Finnish wouldn't likely be there at all. It is a shame that the majority of Celtic languages are either extinct or have a very small number of speakers. In recent years I have been attempting to revive the Welsh I spoke as a kid, with quite a lot of success. This has made me quite curious about other Celtic languages and it is a shame that the few that survive have so few speakers when compared to other languages and language families.

Like LanguageSponge, I'll go back an review my old goals which I wrote in March 2009.

Oh you horrible, horrible person! Making me choose only five languages besides the ones I already speak (English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese)? Well, here's my attempt at it. But like others have said, some change with the mood.

Greek
Russian
Japanese
Arabic
Italian

Another language to consider might be German...

Greek, if we can still count that (because I "speak" it now), Russian, Japanese, and Arabic would definitely be in there, but I'm not very interested in Italian anymore, so instead I'd probably say Finnish. If I don't count Greek, then I'd probably say Georgian, Swahili, Czech, Hungarian, Mandarin, or German. So many choices! So here are the two possible lists:

List 1: Greek, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Finnish
List 2: Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Finnish, Georgian/Swahili/Czech/Hungarian/Mandarin/German
(the last one is always the hardest to choose)

classical Arabic Chinese Latin Greek and Sanskrit

As they influence practically all living languages. I think fluency in all of these would be a good enough base to learn almost any other language.
