I agree with Sir Nigel. I'm surprised this hasn't been locked.

And you were still unable to contribute to this forum.

No, he did contribute, just not very helpfully.

Threads like this make me miss usenet newsgroups, where you have functions to filter out (aka "plonk") individual posters, and carry on discussing and debating on a civilised level with the rest of the group.

The way to get the thread back "on track" would be to contribute something on the original subject: the type of Spanish spoken in Barcelona.

But it is not a terribly complicated subject to begin with so I guess it was more or less thoroughly covered on the first couple of pages and it is not easy to come up with anything new. At least I can't. From that point of view we might as well have the thread blocked.

I've listened to some Catalan audio, and I can't figure it out why it's related to French. I mean, to my ears it's more like a mix of Spanish with European Portuguese.

I also could understand 95% of their texts (wikipedia). Sometimes I think: "why separate two very closed languages for political reasons, when they are so similar?".

That's where moderators usually step in.

Why stop there? We might as well unite Spanish with Portuguese since they are also so similar ;-)

There are people who apparently want as many languages as possible (the 'Ethnologues'), and there are people who want to limits the number of recognized languages to the bare minimum. If the first group can find two persons who can't understand each then they claim that there are two languages involved. If the second group find two persons who CAN understand each other across a presumed language barriere, then they claim that there is really only language.

The possibility of lumping Portuguese and Spanish together has been discussed in another thread, and I haven't changed my mind since I wrote in that thread.

For me the classical division between Portuguese and Castilian ("Spanish") and Catalan (with Basque as a complete outsider) is simply the most practical and economical solution to the problem of linguistic diversity on the Iberian Peninsula.

Maybe there are some pockets of Aragonese up North, but they are just the last afterglow after a glorious but distant past, and they will probably die out soon.

Galician is a more complicated case. It is basically a dialect of Portuguese (in spite of the prevailing Castilianized writing), and as far as I know there is a borderzone where it merges imperceptibly into standard European Portuguese. However it does matter that there is a political border, and if the Galicians should decide to let Galician glide further and further away from Portuguese Portuguese then at some point they will definitely have a real language, though still closely related to Portuguese.

The connection between Catalan and French is not very strong. If Occitan (in its pure form) had dominated Southern France as it did in the middle ages it would certainly have been reasonably close to Catalan, but instead we have a situation where either standard French or French with a smattering of Occitan patois dominates the area, and both these variants are quite far from Catalan.

I learned THAI at DLI so believe me I had a level that many of you would envy in any language--but, as I stated, it is a performance skill.

according to your military file (*information releasable under the freedom of information act) you started basic arabic farsi on 940407, basic thai on 940425 and you received your discharge on 940718... so, you learned thai in about 3 months? awesome! :P

So what the hell?

Where are your CLick Stop Language Skills?

Get real?

You people live in a small world away from reality.

YOu want it that way and you argue non sequiturs. To show you about your pathetic specious skills I will use

You never prove anything trying to argue exceptions--and that is what you failed logic students try to do.

Maybe if some of you had an education beyond wishes and deisres you would be able to keep up. Look, I
have studied more langagues that most all of you. I have gone to the hardest languages school on the planet-

But you don't want to listen.

Go down with the Hindenberg.

This man is just trying to act like an ass. By denigrating the hobbies and achievements of others he seeks to
validate his own worth. By purposely inciting people in this forum for those who love learning languages, he
hopes his views will get extra attention.

Oh Aldo, you are so intelligent and such a tough man. We should all listen to your great wisdom and common
sense.

EDIT: typo
