Wow...a lot of great goals out there! I really began studying languages in earnest just about a year ago. I hadn't posted my goals, so by doing so for 2007, it may hold me more accountable.
By the end of January, I want to finish Programmatic Spanish 1. (Should be easy, I am in lesson 22 out of 25.) If more of level 2 Programmatic is put up on the fsicourses site, then I will keep working through it, if not I will jump into the FSI Spanish baxic course. After reading about Tuffy's journies, I want to get at least half way through the course by year end. (Though finishing it would be better.)
Since I may be going to the Ukraine for my brother's wedding, I am slugging through the Pimsleur Russian program. I would like to complete all three levels by year end.
Not only shaping my mind, but my body also, I will be committing myself to training for a marathon. This way I can crank out both miles and lessons!
Best of luck to all and happy new year!!!

1.) Be able to instantly describe and hand write from memory, 4000
traditional characters and their simplified versions if applicable.
2.) 10000 word active vocabulary
*3.) I like to systematically start ingesting and memorizing 成语, but I
think this will be 2008's language goals.

1.) As I'm in Germany until July, focus mostly on German with the goal of mastering that language as close to hopefully native as possible, or at least acquiring at native-sounding accent to go with spoken fluency. Hopefully read more in German.
2.) With Spanish, learn more specialized as well as expansive vocabulary to be able to talk about a wider range of topics. Also, learn the grammar better, which for me mostly involves finally mastering the verb forms. Hopefully learn some more idiomatic expressions, and decide whether or not the my pronunciation needs work. Read the books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez I've bought.
3.) I've learned and relearned Esperanto grammar, but have never really been fluent in it. But since I've already spent the time on it, I will try to learn the extra vocabulary I need to become fluent in it finally.
4.) I've studied Norwegian, but not to fluency. However, before I go onto more languages, I would like to bring the ones I have studied (namely these latter two) to fluency, so I have the feeling of accomplishing something more completely than just leaving things half-baked.
5.) Be more forgiving of myself! I'm thinking of taking an undetermined amount of time from language study for a while. Maybe the year, maybe longer, maybe (hopefully) not so long. It might not be a complete break as my above goals would suggest, and I might cheat a little bit more, because I'd really love to learn French, but either I need to ease up on myself and be more forgiving of my learning limitations, or I need to take a break to keep myself from getting burned out. I typically set very high goals for myself, and then go rather "drill-sergeant" on myself to get there, but often I don't make it with that kind of motivation. So I'm thinking of a little pause for a while this year, to get some breathing room. I'd like to focus on some other interests I've acquired, that I feel maybe language studying would take time from.

After doing some more thinking, I've decided to update my goals for next year a bit. I still hope to reach basic fluency in Russian next year, but my latter two goals have changed. Instead of finishing my Latin textbook, I now hope to reach an intermediate level in my newest language: German! Does that sound reasonable and attainable?

1. Maintain ability in French and Spanish.
2. Improve ability in German and Italian.
3. Develop some reasonable level of proficiency in Portuguese and Norwegian.
I realize these goals may sound fairly vague. However, I'm not always able to understand as much as I would like of German and Italian when I see those languages written or hear them spoken.
Similarly, I am only a true beginner in Portuguese and Norwegian, and I want to be able to handle at least a few basic and simple situations in those languages.

Well, I joined the Navy as a CTI (basically an interpreter), so I'll be at DLI in Monterey California for all of 2007 and some of 2008 learning either Arabic or Mandarin. I hope that I can learn the language they assign to me fluently in a year and a half. If I get a choice of which language, I'm going to choose Arabic. I can't wait!!

1) French: get better at literary language and learning less common words by reading a lot.
2) Italian and Turkish: I want to reach 'basic fluency' during the next year in both languages. In Italian I'm not too far away from it, but I need to make more effort in Turkish.
3) Work through a Latin textbook for schools. I will focus only on reading and would like to read some easy classical texts by the end of the year.

1) Maintain my Spanish / English, by reading at least 15 books that I've bought this year, and also listening and speaking exercises.
2) French: I expect to be fluent in the language by the end of the year. I'm going to spend 9 days on France in September.
3) Italian: Start learning it in December, as this will be my goal for 2008.
