But I think there are a couple of major differences between my word list techniques and Leitner. |

Hm. I didn't mean that exactly. I meant how I'd end up mentally, uh, parsing it. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean.
I think my main problem with SuperMemo is the way it handles cycles. You cycle through the list of words, kick out what you know, and leave in what you do. Okay. I generally have "word cycles" consisting of anywhere between 30 and 70 entries a night. The repetition isn't really fast enough to encode trouble words. Likewise, you're still wasting a lot of time picking off words that you know but are still in there.
I imagine that if the list was broken down into several smaller cycles of five or so words, that you could just go through sequentially, it'd work a lot better. Especially if you could, say, arrange related words in the small cycles, then arrange the smaller cycles into larger cycles. I'd also consider this useful for, say, that replacement thing. You could build sub-cycles around a single sentence, with X number of replacements in that sentence.
If there actually is a way to do this, I'd be glad to hear it. I'm assuming it might involve folders/root nodes or something, but I don't really know.
The other possible problem is that flashcards have just become too mechanical for me. This is why I don't really get anything from workbooks, either. Here's a model sentence, copy it, and switch the word as directed. Bleh.
Oh, and as for the source of words, it's a mix of large lists of common words I find online/prepackaged with other notecard software, and stuff I encounter in books. So generally stuff that seems useful or at least common.
