Hi Bryan,
Thanks. It sounds like you're more up to date than me. My last message from Heisig was in May:

I wish the Chinese version were finished, but we are committed not to releasing the first part (of two) of the Traditional hanzi until the Simplified are also completely done. My guess is this coming Winter or Spring at the latest.

Hello Leosmith,
Its interesting to follow your language log. I completed Pimsleur III a month ago and Im right now working on the FSI modules. Same as you, I also use Chinesepod as a complement.
I havent tried Supermemo but I can see you like it a lot. I write new words and sentences and put them in my cell phone by using the java software http://www.ironfrost.co.uk/flashcards/
Im looking forward to read about your trip to Dalian.

Hi fredrik,
How do you like FSI? I may do that some day. Unfortunately, after Dalian I'll have to put Mandarin on hold for a while. I'll continue to do my supermemo reps, but no new material. I like the idea of flashcards on the cell phone; I'll have to check that out some day.

Hi Leo,
I started to use Pimsleur mandarin in december 2006. I must say Im a true Pimsleur fan. However, after 90 lessons you start to get a little bored and want to try something new. I decided to use FSI as my main source. Im just in the midst of Module 2 and so far, I like what I hear and read. FSI goes deeper than Pimsleur and I like that, I also like to have written material.
In May this year, I went to China with Pimsleur III halfway finished. I must say it was an interesting experience. I didnt get far in conversations but just to be able to ask for directions, price bargaining, a little smalltalk with the taxidriver was a thrilling experience (at least for me).
Now I know I need to learn more vocalbulary and speaking skills. Your experience with a tutor seems very interesting. I just fell its too early for me, my tongue just gets stuck. But you seems to have managed...Thanks for the link to the interesting article written by Greg Thomson.
Im going back to China in September for one week. I will try to learn as much as possible until then by using FSI and CPod.
Using the cell phone has been very good for me. The language lists for Pimsleur I-III can be downloaded and added in the java program. Whenever I have five minutes of free time I practice a few words/sentences.

Phase 2 is officially over. I've been very happy with my tutor. If anyone is interested in using her, pm me and I'll send you her email. Here is a referral I wrote for her:

1. How did you find out about Gina?
I placed an ad on craigslist, and she answered it.
2. How long did you study together?
10 weeks, 44 classes, 60 min each.
3. What do you think about studying online?
I love it. It's very convenient.
4. What you think about Gina's teaching?
Gina is an excellent teacher. Her explanations and pronunciation are superb. Her flexibility and patience are much appreciated. The word lists that she made for me are extremely useful, and her high-quality audio recordings invaluable. I'd highly recommend her to anyone else. |

It's interesting to follow your language log.
Congratulations on your success so far.
I wanted to ask you one thing.
Thank you very much for posting the mandarin phonetics table. You mentioned, that you put all the sounds from the chart into one sound file - If I understood right - and used it for listening.
How did you do it exactly? Downloaded the whole web page onto your computer and then did it manually?
all the best and a lot of energy for your further studies!
