I am not sure what you are talking about.
What I am using is this chart from time to time :
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/multimedia /pron/chart/chart.shtml
The phonemic alphabet with its sounds.
It isn't necessary to be a genius to understand this and very useful.

In your example, after I learn how to pronounce 'th' by putting my tongue between my teeth, shape my mouth correctly, blow in the correct amount of air, and vibrate my vocal cord at the right time, I will know it thereafter. I don't need to know what 'theta' in IPA is. Correct? |

It depends on the individual.

She was drawing this diagram:

Take away all the IPA symbols, point to anywhere in the chart, and I would have some idea what it sounds like. The symbols are just there to confuse me.

Edwin, you've made your point very clear that you have no use for the IPA. Is there a point beyond this that we are missing?

Look Edwin, you're just as bad as Zhuangzi. There's no absolute harm in not knowing IPA. At the same time there's no absolute harm in knowing it. It's not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Just because you, Zhuangzi and others didn't find it to be useful, it doesn't mean that everyone else will also share your experience and thus agree with your criticism of it.

Maybe to confuse you, but not to me.
The symbols are very useful for me.
Why?
Because with a few repetitions a know automatically how the phoneme sounds
and , when I read this symbols in a word representations, I know automatically the sound.

I did not say that IPA is of no use to me. My point is that it is an overkill for a typical language learner.
A few forum members responsed with things like, "part of it is useful to us". In other words, they agree that it is an overkill.
However, some forum member tries to attack me verbally, saying that I am as bad as somebody else. Should I report this to the administrators?

The IPA may or not be overkill, but your posts sure are!
