There's something I'd like to add here. Some people talk more clearly than others. So for me (listening to Spanish), there are several people that I can understand just fine, others I can understand so-so.
Then there's the men/boys with the low voices that slur everything together and tend to mumble (much like I do in English ) that I can't understand at all.

I have the same problem with Spanish; I just can't understand certain "accents". My listening ability in Spanish depends almost entirely on the other person. Fortunately, most of the people on television speak clearly.

Hi Souley,

You might find this link helpful: www.fluentfrench.com.

Even if you're not learning French, I think the tips are applicable. What I found really interesting was the section on echoing. If you're learning French or Spanish, there are very good resources for this on www.bbc.com/languages. There are also a few, less extensive transcript/audio resources for German and Italian.

You probably already have many resources, but just need new ideas on making the most of them.

Good luck.

Hi everyone.

I would like to get your opinions on building listening comprehension while using transcripts. I've seen one tip that advises against using a transcript (even if it's in the target language) and I've seen another that suggests it's okay to look at the transcript in both your mother tongue and the target language (just once I think) while listening to the recorded material for the first time in the target language. Does any one have additional info on this matter?

Thanks!

Champs-Elysées is a company here in the US that produces four audio magazines. One each for learners of French, German, Spanish and Italian. The CDs are like a talk-radio program. A printed transcription is included with the CD.

If you're learning Spanish, there is another company in California that publishes a regular print magazine for learners of Spanish. It's called Think Spanish! It has an optional audio CD with the articles read aloud.

I've subscribed to both of these magazines. Puerta del Sol, published by Champs-Elysées, is still a little difficult for me.

One other thing I've considered, but haven't tried yet, is to buy an unabridged audiobook and a printed version of the same book. Has anyone else tried this?

I have but I'm very early on with the process and now it's on hold because my other studies leave me no time for it.
