One other thing I've considered, but haven't tried yet, is to buy an unabridged audiobook and a printed version of the same book. Has anyone else tried this?

Seems very interesting - I had never thought about it. For Russian there are many audiobooks you can buy in MP3 and also e-books, especially for classics. Sounds interesting - I'll see if I can try.

I think that you absorb a lot more when you hear it read out to you. When listening, you generally do not avoid the things you don't know and you don't skim parts, though this may be a good or bad thing.

I just borrowed a copy of Le Petit Prince with the audio version - I haven't looked at it for a long time.

Really? Well I bought some of the English audiobooks for Harry Potter - but in my public library, I was able to find French recordings of the first 4 Harry Potter series. Check out to see if it's in your public library system. Our system permits us to put holds on items in libraries and it is delivered to the local public library. It's quite efficient and I booked a lot of books and materials that way.

Funny. I just started reading the first Harry Potter book in Spanish. I wonder if there's a Spanish audiobook.

Well there is an unabridged audiobook of "Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal." Amazon has it for US$77.95 and I was only able to find it with Google. Apparently Amazon doesn't have it "shelved" correctly. But I just called my local bookstore and they have it for about US$40. There was one review on Amazon by a learner of Spanish. She said that the audiobook follows the printed version word-for-word. I'm going to pick it up tonight. If anyone is interested, the ISBN is 847888856X.

I'm wondering how I should do this. Should I read the English version first? Should I just use the English version as a reference? Or, should I try to do it without the English version.

Should I try to listen to the chapters before reading them? Or, should I read the chapters then listen to them? I was thinking I'd listen to a chapter a few times, then read it, then listen again.

Any ideas?

I am reading a chapter in the foreign language, looking up any words I don't know, and trying to commit those to memory. Then when I finish the chapter I will go back and read along while listening until I know it pretty well. And then finally, just listen to it. On to the next chapter, etc.
