I spent 40 minutes at SharedTalk. Group text chat - 10 minutes, 30 minutes one-on-one.

I've just printed out 4 emails from penpals that I've been receiving since Friday: two of them are 3 pages each! I tell you, Sunday is Language Exchange Day in japan. I won't rush to answer these. I'll start working on one of them and then I'll do some vocabulary work.

I may have to change my profile at SharedTalk to stop the other emails from coming -- I've reached my penpal limit. I responded to those 3 new people with a "yes, I'll try" and I just wrote a "no, I can't" to my most recent request for an exchange. At least I'm getting plenty of experience writing in Japanese!

Two more came in yesterday. I've gotten a total of 6 emails all together. (it's almost hard to keep track.) I have three more replies and that should do it for this wave. This is my last log entry until -- sometime next week. I'm preparing for a very spontaneously booked vacation. I have to go pick up the tickets in about an hour..

I'm getting a lot of practice writing. I'm a bit swamped at the moment, but I've been able to keep up so far..

Yesterday was the first day I was able to get back to my emails. I've written about 3 correspondants. Here's what my writing looks like so far:

My sent version doesn't have all that garbage in it, though....

Two days ago I got my first issue of "Hirigana Times". This plus the emails will keep me busy until the end of my TAC. It's a magazine for learners of Japanese. The articles are in both languages + furigana. I read the "Multilevel Hiragana Text" about Japanese life expectancy yesterday. This is the section of the magazine with extra notes and a very thorough translation. There's even a link to smart.fm for extra vocab study: http://smart.fm/landing/Hiragana. Haven't tried it yet. Too busy reading. There's even a job section. Love it.

I'd like to start over with French. I was able to do tourist-y kinds of exchanges getting into Disneyland. I only had trouble at a couple of restaurants. I tried to order Cola Lite and I got a Heineken. Go figure.

Link dropping time:
Hiragana Times at smart.fm

For the purpose of doing some extra vocab work with these HT articles I've started two new lists. I just spent 30 minutes with the first list. As soon as I read this other article I'll go back and work with the second list...

All's quiet on the email front. I must have really given them something to do with my last writings...

I plan to read my Hiragana Times today and work on the vocab using smart.fm. I may consider making my own list. This would be a lot of fun, although I have to keep in mind I couldn't spend too much time making said list. Too much playing around at smart.fm, and I don't realise that I could be learning just as much by casually looking at the words in the magazine 5 times a day. I'll have to consider the efficiency factor on that one..

I have one more week of "USE IT OR LOSE IT", then I can kiss my casual summer break goodbye. I have to start working in the mornings, starting one week from this coming Monday. I also have to prepare for my kids' going back to school. That includes Schultüten basteln, Hefte, Mappen (usw.) sammeln. There's two of them so I have double the fun this fall.

I've finished one of the Hiragana Times partner lists at smart.fm. I'm almost half way through the second list. I've already started composing some new writing using some new stuff I've picked up. ~niwa...arimasu., hashiri mawaru, doonika suru, among others. I can't wait to get more into this magazine. I'll be taking a break tomorrow because I'm making a day-trip to Köln.

I'm not getting as much done as I'd like -- that comes from having everyone here during summer break. I can't wait to gauge my progress at the end of the month. I'll be taking one of my first emails and comparing it with my latest, best shot at writing Japanese. I'm hoping the results will make me sit back with --- akireta kao o suru -- an amazed face.

I really want to compose a list for smart.fm -- buuuuut this is going against my own idea of efficiency -- I'll spend too much time playing.

I read quite a bit of my magazine on the train yesterday. I'm waiting for my mom to finish downloading photos from her netbook so I can send some vacation shots to one of my penpals, who is eagerly awaiting a decent report. I have to try to find a small, simple way to describe some of those grand scale exhibits in the Kölner Zoo yesterday. (The elephant park was pretty impressive. Never seen 11 elephants up close...)

I wrote a new Japanese correspondant this morning at SharedTalk. I haven't been able to get back to text chat since my vacation. That will have to wait. I really want to continue reading as much as I can. If I can get into a groove where I'm reading, looking up words (with an old-fasioned hard copy dict. -- this is most effective for me) and cross-referencing I think I can get a lot accomplished. I've been doing a lot of writing lately, and I have to balance that out.

Can't wait for my next issue of HT.

If I don't catalogue Yukari's corrections they'll just sit here on my desk and I'll never read them, so here goes:

dizuniirandopari de ryokoo wo shimashita. ---) when will I ever learn the rules for DE and NI? ryokoo wo suru takes NI, ryokoo wo suru takes NI, ryokoo wo suru takes NI...

----) NA ARU NO DE, nyuujyoryomo WARIBIKIKEN wo mottekimashita.

I need to remember the connecting TE.

machi ni ha ryokousha ga sukunakatta shi, tenki ga ii datta shi, mondai ga nai desu. ---) ryokoosha ga sukunakatta shi, tenki MO ii YOKATTA NO DE, (MONDAI GA NAKATTA DESU.)

She also offers this alternative:
ryokoosha MO sukunakatta shi, tenki mo ii yokatta SHI, YOKATTA DESU.

Here comes a really good one:
unten mo jikan ga takusan atta muzukashii. tsukuremashita ga, hoteru ni tsuku no ato aruite paruku de kenbutsushimashita.

----) unten JIKAN MO takusan atta NO DE TSUKUREMASHITA GA,hoteru ni TSUKIITA ATO, ARUITE KENBUTSUSHIMASHITA.

subarashii! okashi ga takusan arimashta. watashi taberu no ha yoonenki no toki innai made tabeta koto ga arimasen deshita.
---) subarashii okashi ga takusan arimashita. watashi WA SONO OKASHI WO KODOMO NO TOKI MADE TABETA....

Yukari mentions that I can't use irai and made in the same sentence. Of course that makes sense. Essentially I just wrote "since until". Ouch.

resutoran de mo tabemashita ga, sono ryoori, takakute, sukoshi aji ga nai.
---) sono ryoori HA takakute sukoshi aji ga ARIMASEN DESHITA.

....OISHI furansu ryoori wo ....

WHEW. That was all of the corrections. Here, I just got another mail from one of my other penpals:
スーゼンさんこんにちは!お元気ですか?と ても楽しそうな写真ありがとうございました !スーゼンさんはとても綺麗な方ですね!!
ディズニーランド旅行はとても良かったみた いですね(^-^)bとても楽しそうです♪お話聞か せていただいてありがとうございました!私 も行ってみたくなりました。それにしてもせ っかくフランスに行ってフランス料理食べた のに、味がないなんて残念でしたね…( ̄ー )お土産も沢山買いましたか?

Obviously I gave this penpal the same version of what I wrote Yukari (lol). Did I buy omiyage? Hmm. I bought a "Mike" from "Monster's Inc." to put on my desk. I wanted a "Roz" but they didn't have one. I --don't-- think she's going to recognize that as a suvonier so I'll just tell her I bought some postcards...

Now I have to work on this penpal's English corrections (she talked about her baking) and after that I plan to inquire about the Obon festival which should be coming up, and of course, I have to write a response to the yummy-looking picture she sent me of her strawberry and choco marble mini-cakes,...
