This is what I just wrote to Yukari. I'm interested to see what mistakes I made this time. A lot of these words I've never used before and I don't know how to pronounce them. For instance, Elefanten Park ゾウ舎, 舎 could also be "sha" but I won't know until I hear it. And is it "とう" for 頭? I'll have to ask..

watashi no inshoo ni nokotta ha zooseki deshita! doobutsuen de ha jyuuichi too no zoo ga imashita. ooku no zoo wo mita koto ga arimasenn deshita ne! sooseki no rikuchi ha 20 paasento wo shimeteimasu. keji no doobutsu wo mikakemasen. doobutsuen no shiiku kankyoo wo dekiru dake shizen na jyootai ni chikadukeru torikumi no ha, ii koto da to omoimasu.

deizuniirando no shashin ha kazoku no desu. watashitachi ha nemureru mori no bijin no shiro no mae ni iru deshita. uchi no musume ha toori gakari no hito no mawari wo hashirimawarimashita no de, maakiiro no jyaketto wo kimashita....

I go on to talk about the photos and the family yadayada ... This is enough for the log.

There seems to be a growing number of threads on the subject of language exchange (it's about time) and I suppose it will be just a matter of time before we all leave.

Charlmartell, turiwais...(whatever) and now Reineke is pondering a break from the forum. I have to wait until TAC is over. I have to see this thing through. It's taking up too much time to log everything, but logging in the extra corrections helps me to focus on my mistakes so...

thank goodness I'm a fast typer.

As long as I've logged in my corrections, I thought I'd add a snippet of what one of my penpal's English looks like. She's one of the better English speakers that I have,

I wrote:
"Those paragraphs are probably full of mistakes. It's hard for me to write long paragraphs -- even though I want to -- it's hard. Even when I have something good like Disneyland to talk about! ^^ I'll download some photos from the camera to send next time. Then I'll write more about what I saw. There was so much it's hard to recall everything at once! We had a great time!"

my penpal wrote:
"I understand your feeling! In my case, especially it often happens on speaking conversation. While I speak English, my English starts to be broken and I also know it, but I can't stop my speaking.^^;
Anyway, let's enjoy studying together!!^^
I'm looking forward to hear more about your trip and seeing pictures!^^"

Not bad, but she's expecting me to clean that up a little. I have to respond with some more about my trip (Japanese) and then I still haven't written my other penpal from yesterday. I have a draft about the Obon. I'm going to go work on it now.

I've been going over motoko's corrections and she gave me some really good insight.
She points out that since I've already mentioned in a previous mail that I was traveling to France, the word "traveling" is not necessary. "ikimasu" is used. Then she goes on to say we DO use DE with ryokoo wo suru, but only in the context of "within". "I'm traveling within (DE) the United States, but I'm traveling to (NI) N.Y.C.

Here I'm a little fuzzy on the translation but I think she's saying I need to be more accurate with the wording. "because the 15th year anniversary hits this year/summer, there's a special (commemorative parade/price placed on the ticket) Japanese is pretty logical, and she's saying that if there is another reason for the issuance of a discount this year, then I need to be more precise. AUWEIA.

Motoko's corrections will take a bit more thought than Yukari's...

I was thinking this morning,..

I only have about 4 full months left of TAC. My ultimate goal was to be able to understand television and read a newspaper in Japanese (Spanish, French are out). As monumental as this task is I'm really going to push myself to the maximum.

I've developed a short-term plan. It's like a marathon and you never sprint to the very end -- it's better to gain leads with short "bursts". Here's the plan.

one listening quiz per day + vocab from the transcript (link I'll re-post; it's buried here somewhere)

one section (5-6 sentences) of Kanzen Master listening practice. I won't do the dictation like the book says (too difficult). Read, copy, listen.

3-5 sentences (have to see how this goes) of my Kanzen Master vocab/grammar.

keep up with all my penpals, including new correspondants from SharedTalk. I can't seem to deactivate my email without shutting them off, so I may need to had two new penpals from SharedTalk to my regulars list and then limit my profile/account. That way I won't get any new people.

If I give all of them a big chunk of writing all at once then there's usually a lull of a few days. That will give me some breathing room.

I still have Besuch for the summer but they'll be leaving on Sonntag. Monday I have to start working. Chefin wants me to start tutoring on Monday. The first day I have to cram a lesson of all adverbs, Adjektiven, Präpositionen (Bildung/Gebrauch) + Gerundium. All in 1 1/2 hour's time. The second day is even better: I have to cover all the tenses (including progressives) PLUS Aktiv/Passiv. ALL the tenses. Yeah. Those poor 8th-graders. As if puberty weren't enough.

I'll have to come up with a miracle of a lesson plan.

Meantime, let the marathon continue.

I wrote three people yesterday,

Tomomi: I responded to her picture and started talking about how good Germans are at baking (how I'm not) and asking her for a recipe for her cherry blossom muffins. It was s short message.

Hana: this took some time, because she's a Japanese/Eng teacher and she writes a lot of English. I resonded to a few things she said about her plans for the fall

Yuka: She interacts the most, asking a lot of questions. I gave her a nice chunk of writing about German customs for first-grade, talked about my kids, and explained what a "Shultüte" is in Japanese -- that was fun.

CHECKED MY MESSAGES TODAY

Mariko has written me two pages. I have a lot of English to correct and I haven't gone over it yet, but it seems she wrote about the new Saiban-in System in Japan. I don't know anything about it and she's asking my opinion. Looks like I have homework to do. She also wrote about some an Obon festival and sent me some pictures of some fireworks.

"Polar Bear" at ScharedTalk: she sent me a looong message. She's asking for text chat.

Kyamina: also from SharedTalk...

And somebody new that I'm just going to have to say "sorry, can't respond"

--man, I have to re-route these people and turn off my email at SharedTalk!!

I have quite a bit of Japanese writing to do today, on many different subjects! Gardening, building a house, the new Saiban-in System, Obon, Japanese / French / German customs...and facemarks. One of them gave me a quiz on how many facemarks I could recognize. I had fun using all those adj. hanashii, hazukashii, odoroi, itai...
wonder how I scored.

I don't have my contacts in yet and I have no idea what I#m writing....

I went over 2 sections of my Kanzen Master -- vocab yesterday. Today I'll try going over those listening quizes. I plan to do the onw from yesterday and today..

I've been up early this morning. I went to look for "Polar Bear" at SharedTalk but she didn't show, so I spend about 10 minutes in the group chat room. I'm getting better. I was able to follow along with the (very fast moving) kanji and I could hold my own for a time. Then someone cut in and the smalltalk ended -- and I ran out of coffee -- that was actually the most important thing.

I just finished writing a small paragraph about this and that, to help me out the next time I get a wave of penpal emails. I actually have too many (!). I think it's now 8. They don't write all at once and they DO have lives, so it's staggered. I'm still glued to my mailbox, though, and until I get faster it will be tough to keep up. My family is already irritated at the amount of time I spend on these emails.

I'm progressing. They understand what I'm trying to do and the potential of what I'm planning to accomplish. It's exciting to see improvement. Thanks to all this writing, getting corrections, writing....I can express myself pretty well. Of course I have to look up everything (still) and I have to double check the grammar (dictionary form before "shi" and that sort of thing...)

Okay I've rambled on enough. I have to get out and do other stuff today. Yes, I have a "lull" in the flux of emails. Everybody's quiet. I'm off to do something else today. woo-hoo!

Got some corrections already,

The first sentence is mine. The second is the correction.

I don't think my penpal realizes that it wasn't an elephant cage, rather a "elephant park". I copied the term ゾウ舎 from the Japanese website for the Kölner Zoo but she still wrote "cage". I couldn't find "nokoya" in my dictionary. I wanted to say that the elephant park makes up about 20 percent of the zoo's ground area.

着ました=She wore bright yeallow vest.
I let her to wear bright yeallow vest.

This is good stuff. I've already been practicing with "tagatta". I DID want to say "so she wore a bright yellow vest" but I should have filled in another sentence. It doesn't quite make sense the way it is here.

that was it
