More corrections today,
How is the price in French? (her English sentence) ＞How do prices compare in France? (correction) 分かんないな.. 値段は法外に高いと思いま んよ。 (my japanese) どのレストランに存在している。 ＞どこにレストランがあるか（、）によりま す。(correction) それか レストランの場所（／立地（りっち））に よります。 I can't believe I couldn't find anything in Japanese "that depends" and I had to write "existence" -- weird --. Anyway, "NI YORIMASU" was the phrase I was looking for. 日本には「ダウンタウン」というグループ名 のお笑い芸人（comedian）がいますが、「ダウ タウン」という本来の意味としてはあまり われていません。意味を知っている人もい すが、ほとんどの人は意味を知らずに言葉 知っているだけのような気がします。なの 、「繁華街（はんかがい）」、「街中（× 中）」、「街の中心地」を使った方が分か やすいです I'll have to go over this with her to make sure that I understand, but I think she's saying that "downtown" as a loanword is not used in Japan the way it is meant in English. I have to use "machi no chuushinchi" and not "dawuntawun" そのほうが小さい町のレストランより高いだ と思います。 ＞なので、小さい町のレストランより高いと 思います。 文章を作るとき、基本的に形容詞は形容動詞 のように変化しません。文章を文節で区切る と分かりやすくなります。 I think she's saying here that it's easier understand if I use a clause. I have to look up these grammar terms to understand what she's telling me, but I think if I start using "no de" a lot more I'll be better off in my writing. "USE IT OR LOSE IT" Summer Break Study Project (whatever) ends here.
I'm taking off for about 2 weeks due to work. I plan to continue with SharedTalk. (I've been going in to SharedTalk around 7:00am for about half and hour -- mainly group chat.) I have my penpal writings to keep up with, and I'm slowly making my way through my Kanzen Master listening exercises. I'm not sure I can manage all my penpals plus my new work schedule -- the log will remain idle for a couple of weeks, to make sure I have ample time for email and text chat. I seem to be on top of things today so I thought I'd pull up my log.
I've been keeping track of my studies as best I can. My noootessss... aare scattered..around my desk...still looking.... ah- here they are. Okay. Aug. 10 -- 40 minutes of text chat with Polar Bear. Learned a couple of useful words and figured out that どんなところ doesn't always mean which place but what things. Learned 先ずだいいち PC の前に □＿ヾ(・_・ ) カタカタ と 顔文字 sent a mail to yuka and mari-san. I've started up again with smart.fm 学習完了イテム数1,929語. I've finished one of the Hiragana Times Lists and I've added "JLPT 2 Grammar" list and Steps 1-7 of the Japanese Core 6000. I'm only doing 10 words a day out of each, taking it nice and slow. Aug. 11 -- worked on two more emails, translating. text chat 30 minutes with "a-toy" on Skype. Didn't learn much. We talked in German most of the time. He gave me a tip to go to YouTube for KOIKE. Aug. 12, 13 -- I have no idea where my notes are for this day. Oh, I know. I got emails from Kyamina, Tomomi, Kana and Yukari on this day. No wonder I didn't keep any notes. I was too busy writing. Aug. 14 -- Text chat with Kikuchi-san, about 40 minutes. Finished up on an email for Kyamina, and Kana. Read what I could about the Tokyo Tower in the japanese Wiki and tried to write about it. She sent me some great photos of a very empty-looking Tokyo city hotel during the Obon. Received one more email. This one from Mariko. Aug. 15 -- Text chat with Kikuchi-san, about 20 minutes. Worked on Mariko's email. I've prepared a batch of 5 emails to go out tomorrow. I'll send them out all at once. Going through the all the emails, making sure my grammar is sound and deleting that word ラッシュの所 and inputting 大勢ない所, as per Kikuchi-san's recommendation. I tried the word on him in text chat and he'd never heard of it. So much for JFBP book's advice about the Obon. Scratch that word from my active vocab. Every day I've been at smart.fm. vocab work. I've also been working steady. I have 6 kids that I'm tutoring for another week. All 7-10 grade. Been a busy bee. That's it. Aug. 16 Wrote my last remaining mail to Tomomi and send all of them off in one batch. That will give me a period of days free. That was about it. I did some vocab work, but not much.
Aug 17. I worked until 13.00 then I came home and bummed around a bit, did laundry, garden, shopping... At 15.00 I started studying at smart.fm. I've managed to study 2,575 words with them. I wish I knew them well, but I don't. I constantly have to review. For example, I just printed out all the words from Core 2000 Step 6. I've forgotten a few. I stopped for dinner about 6.00, then I got back on after 8.00 and worked until about midnight. Aug 18. Wored until 14.00. Didn't start studying until 6.00. Then I got interrupted with an email from Mariko. I've been working with this, it's really great... She wrote me two pages. she wrote each paragraph of what she wanted to say in English and then the Japanese translation underneath -- very considerate of her to do that, too. That gives me the advantage of being able to see her native language and compare it to what she was trying to express in her target language (Eng.) She likes to write and it shows. This is a sample of what Mariko wrote me. Again, this is NOT MY writing: I often watch politicians debate on TV. Then, they seem to decide which opinion is correct, and they look like zapping. However, I think that the purpose of debate is finding better ideas or ways about the topic. They should exchange the facts and thoughts, not just zapping. （テレビ でよく政治家が� �� ��ィベートをしてい るのを見ます。彼らはどちらの意見が正しい のか、口で相手を打ち負かそうとしているよ うに見えます。 しかし、ディベ ートの本来の意味は議題に対 してより良い考えや方法を見つけることでは ないでしょうか。彼らは口論するのではなく 、考えを互いに出し合うべきなのです。） I really had fun with this. I know words "政治家", "意見", but "口で相手を打ち負す" --"to beat each other up with their mouths"-- I love it! pantoffel attaaaack!!! ( ・_・)⌒°=θ☆( >_<) パコ So anyway "口で相手を打ち負す" is great. I've translated the Japanese, now I have to find a way to correct her English. She can already write English which is why it's a bit difficult...I'll probably let her have "zap". I think I know what she wanted to say. I'll just try to formulate it a little better. Maybe "zapping each other with sound bites, ooor potshots, ooor insults. Something along those lines. I may throw in an alternative, just to make sure. okay that's it. I'd better get to it. There's FIVE paragraphs to her email and this is just one of them. There's plenty to correct and read. I also have to formulate a decent response in Japanese. This one email will probably take me the rest of the day. The other email responses will be coming any day now... Man, I'm tired today. School starts on Monday. Next week will be hectic. I'm looking forward to getting back to my old work schedule (Thurs./Fr.)
I got three emails today and I'll put my corrections here. I'll probably find them here sooner than I would if they just lay here on the desk. I never find what I need and then I can't review, so... Here are Tomomi's corrections. I'm happy that there weren't many. 来週の金曜便までアルベイトです。その後ド イツの学校を始まります。ドイツの学生は秋 までかんばなければなりません。 →来週の金曜日までアルバイトです。その後 ドイツの学校が始まります。ドイツの学生は 秋まで頑張らなければなりません。 so it's がんばら なければ ならない and -- NOT -- "かんば" なければ ならない I misspelled it and missed the conjugation. 学生は学校入れたの前に英語の合格点を必要 です。 →学生は学校に入学する前に英語の合格点が 必要です。 にゅうがくする is a new verb for me. So 入る is wrong. 体が楽ですが、凄い熱あれば、良かった。秋 すぐ来て、暑い日が残り少なかったよ。 →体は楽ですが、本当に暑い日が2、3日あれ 良かった。秋がもうすぐ来てしまうから、 も残り少ないよ。 I really butchered this one. Obviously they don't use "amazing heat/fever". Come to think of it "本当に暑い日" is much easier. もうすぐ(very soon) -- NOT -- すぐ (soon), and 来てしまうから- I'm not so familiar with how to use しまう, but it looks like I'll need to learn. I only know how to use the past form "しまいました" Then I need the plain neg- form before よ and 夏も instead of "hot days". So that wasn't sooo bad. Here come Kyamina's corrections. I'm always bummed when I mess up the word order. (Like this one,) ええ、でも、初めて１年生に入るときに、Sch ultüteは一度だけ使っています。そのプレゼ トです。 ええ、でもSchultuteは一年生になるときに（ま たは入学するときに）一度だけ使うものです 。それは入学のプレゼントなのです。 Subject first. Can't be creative yet. Subject must go first. Then I need 一年生になる (becoming a first year student) and -- NOT -- １年生に入る (going in a first year student). Then 一度だけ使うものです (the thing is, only used one time) I have to remember to use the dictionary form if I want to use that. I think nouns take だ. それ NOT その 東 京の渋滞はすごいだったそうです。 東京の渋滞はすごかったようですね。 I guess I'll have to look up the rules for だそうです, but I thought it would read "I heard that..." I think I would've had to put myself as subject. She used "ようです" (apparently). お盆のごろの東京は、大勢ない所ですね。 お盆の頃の東京は人で混んでいないのですね 。 大勢ない所 is actually an expression I learned during one of my text chat sessions. I guess she didn't care for it. She gave me 人で混んでいない. And I like the use of の there. I looked it up and she uses it to say "(as to) people, not crowded the fact is " referring of course to the previous part of the sentence. 私はインターネットのウィキで読んだから、 東京タワーは放送のために大切らしいです。 私はインターネットのウィキで読んで知った のですが、東京タワーは放送のために大切ら しいですね。 読んで知ったのですが -- NOT --読んだから This is the only correction that I don't quite get but I'm going to have a go at it. I think she's recommending a connecting "-te" and then 知ったの is nominalizing "knew" I think it would translate "so that's how I know that"..... Whew. gonna have to let that one go for a while and do some more reading. 東京タワーのほうがエッフェル塔より１３メ トル大きいですね！ 13メートル いのですね！ 高い taller and -- NOT --大きい bigger. 東京タワーを上げられますか。 東京タワーに上れますか（のぼれますか） She said when I use 上げられますか I'm asking if she can lift Tokyo Tower. not quite what I wanted so the proper verb is 上れますか（のぼれますか） 上る のぼる ASCEND 上げる あげる LIFT, RAISE 登る のぼる CLIMB ホ テルではラジョを聞こえるのことはなかなか いいでしょう。 ホテルでテレビを見られるのは（ラジオを聴 くのは？）、なかなか良いことでしょうね So it's ラジオを聴く and テレビを見られる (can watch) oh yes, subject marker goes after "can watch" and こと (it's a really good thing) goes at the end. Not quite sure she understood what I was trying to say. She wrote "Being able to watch TV and listen to the radio at the hotel is a really good thing." I was trying to say "At the hotel to hear the radio must be really good" -- because of the tower --. Yeah, I know, pretty lame. But it was a good try. What happened to my "broadcasting" sentence? Did I actually get that one right? I don't see it in the mail so it must of been okay. And it's a good thing this is the last one because I'm starting to get a headache. A little "Brain Speed" at smart.fm will take care of that momentarily. ドイツの中学生は忘れたを習うことになって います。 ドイツの中学生は復習をすることになってい ます。 復習をすることになっています try to review -- NOT -- 忘れたを習うことになっています try to learn (what's been) forgotten Oh wow. I guess I'll forget posting Yuka's corrections. Too many for the forum! I guess I'd better improve so I can cut down on space! I like this blog. I'd really like to be able to write like this by the end of the year. I'm not interested writing about food so much as I am writing about observations about family and culture. Nice, intermediate-level sentences -- Yep. A goal that's attainable, unlike many of my goals which are too far out of reach
like thinking I can read a newspaper by December 30. oh, I'm gettin' there but it's a bigger bite than I anticipated. It's lucky that I have other stuff to read besides the newspaper. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Bit frustrated today. The week is starting and it's already proving to be quite a drain on my study time. I didn't do any vocabulary work and I've spent all my study time (probably just one hour) working on the English part of my email replies.
I've received emails from Tomomi, Kyamina, Kana and Yukari. I'm hoping the others will hold because I'm falling behind. School has started. I've been working on Kana's email. She's really started to open up with questions about English. I just wrote a paragraph, trying to explain what she thought she heard and what is -- "got to". Another question was about "terribly sunburned" and "a terrible sunburn" okay that was a pure grammar question for me but difficult thing for a foreign speaker... Then there was this question about "he's everyday" and what that means. Then I couldn't resist bringing up a question I have about 草食男子。 I have an idea, and I know it's a cultural thing that I'm not really ready to delve into yet, but I couldn't resist bringing it up. I've carefully gone over the English and now I have to figure out the Japanese. I've already missed 幸せな悩み. I tried to reply to a comment on it and I think my interpretation was incorrect. Does it not mean "having worries is a good thing"? The first thing I have to do after school is go over this sentence, そういえば、「幸せな悩み」というのは｢悩 むのは贅沢（ぜいたく）だ！｣という意味で す。例えば Having worries is a luxury? hmmm. She wrote a dialogue to illustrate what this phrase means and I'm looking forward to reading it. I have to do something for the other mails. I was so inspired by that Japanese cooking blog I read yesterday that I took pictures of the food during a get-together, and I plan to write a Japanese /Eng. email describing the event and the food. The Japanese cooking blog had great pictures of the wrapped food from the store and it's amazing what little language tidbits you can learn from looking at a foreign-wrapped package of meat. -- 生 -- means "fresh" for example! So I took my pictures of the package of fettreduzierte Geflügelwurst from EDEKA and of the salad made from our garden with these nifty little packets of "Knor" salad dressing, nach griechischer Art. I made sure that I took pictures of the Brötchen and the Wurst - things I imagine would interest (or amuse) them. One of my penpals sent me a picture of a pasta dish that she'd made so I think she'll appreciate my attempt to provide a glimpse of my (second) culture. I mailed off all my emails today. I sent some of them the same thing ("recycled Japanese") but it was really a nice piece -- I'm interested to see where I made the mistakes and what kind of feedback I get. I wrote two huge paragraphs on the concept of "Einschulung" here in Germany. I sent some nice pictures of our grill party too. (Hopefully they'll like my salad. I kinda threw everything together..)
Now that that's out of the way I'm going to do a heavy dose of reading and mix in tons of vocabulary. I haven't been to smart.fm in days... not tonight anymore. It's DVD night. 1 person has voted this message useful |
