wow, thanks for the tip! I decided to go ahead and write something. It's snowing like crazy and no point in going out anymore. Anybody passing by, feel free to comment! As for the Japanese writing suggestions, kana/romanji would be okay, too, otherwise it takes a bit longer for me to read your comments. There's a lot I don't know! Thanks for the help! 先ず、英語で背詰めする。。。 It's really snowing today. The car is stuck (in the snow) so I had trouble. I came home on foot. The kids came home and watched a video. There's a package for me at the post office but I don't know what it is (I wrote "package contents"). I want to go the post office and pick it up, but I haven't yet. There's work, and I usually have to pick up the kids. I wonder what's in the package. (I wrote something different below, "the package, what is it", but I'm not sure how to inflect that. I'll help out with the Japanese passage you just posted. I'm not a native speaker though so I'm only gonna correct the stuff I'm sure about.
でも、荷物内が分からない If you want to say something like 'I don't know what's inside', you can use an embedded question. Put the question into the plain form, add か and then put 分からない or whatever after it. でも、小包の中に何があるか、分からない。 Or maybe 小包の中に何が入ってるか、分からない 荷物 means luggage, so something like '小包、こづつみ' (little thing wrapped up!) or '包み、づつみ' would be better. I wonder what's in the package. To say 'I wonder' you can add 'かな' or 'かしら'(feminine) to the end of a sentence (plain form). 小包は何かな 小包の中に何かしら 小包の中に何が入ってるかなあ etc etc Hope that helps! 日本語の勉強はがんばってね！ 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

How cute! "little thing wrapped up"! Is it specifically used for packages or does that work for babies and food too? ;) I heard a English loanword パケット once, but I checked it and it looks like it's used for EDV only (?) I don't know what a DHL envelope is so cannot answer that question, however

Ah well... Some days the kanji seem to run together. Especially after a day like today.
Log Entry: My day began at 5:30am so after 3:00 I needed a breather. After three is when I do my writing. Only this afternoon was my daughter's Christmas pageant at the school and we were all out until about 7:00. Afterwards we had take-out pizza, a round of "Last uns Froh und Munter Sein" and a good night story. In a few minutes they'll be asleep and I get to play Nikolaus (Bischoff, not Santa) before I go to bed. I managed to do Level 6 (28 words) and one article in Japanese. I'm beat. The weekend is here so maybe I can pack in a few more hours. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

NIKU-JUKU is still a bit advanced. The extra vocabulary work I've been doing has helped me with the glossary at the end but it still takes an effort to dissect. I could spend more time with it but I think it's more beneficial to work with something a little bit easier. I've decided to start copying sentences from various books. I just pick one up and start writing.
I've begun going over Heisig flashcards. I did 500-650 yesterday and I'll tackle another set this evening. I've discovered all those kanji I memorized don't function unless I use them, so I have to review constantly. There's plenty of times when I see a part of a kanji and can't quite put it together. The flashcards I do whenever I can. I'm waiting for a server connection? Flashcards. Waiting in the doctor's office? Flashcards. Etc.etc. I've finished with Levels 3,4 of IKnow! and I do about 30 minutes of Brain Speed a couple of times a week keep those words from passing into obilivion as well. I started digging for sentences in the Internet for words I was learning 匂い、ホ--ム and was finding interesting stuff like 食べ物や料理、自然の物にはいい匂い and いつもキッチンからいい匂い。 but it was taking a bit of time for me to find contexts without too many new words. It becomes too time-consuming when I have to look up extra words. I did this with a few of the lesson's vocabulary and it started taking too long for me to get through the lesson, so... I'm doing 6 lessons a day (IKnow!), 10 words apiece. Most of the time I'm not at the computer or I'm not able to study. Yet, I have to study. How do I do this. I got out my old dictation recorder from college (miracle that it still functions) and I put the recorder up to the speaker and recorded about 100 (native speaker's voice) sentences from the levels I'm working out of. I recorded my voice shadowing these sentences. I played this back yesterday and really concentrated on the lesson like it was the first time. Turns out I'd already forgotten 3 or 4 words anyway. My pronunciation is improving. Shadowing the sentences also helps me with syntax. So this is a good thing. I plan to record 100 more sentences this way and as long as it's working....and with 200 sentences per lesson there's plenty to work with. It gets pretty hectic before Christmas but... Before the 24th: I'll finish Levels 5,6 -- that's about 1200 all together from Levels 1-6. I like keeping track. It shows me where I've been and where I'm going. I don't have that much time this morning. In about 10 minutes I have to go take my daughter to her lesson at 11.00, then I have one hour before I have to pick up the other one.... this afternoon there's a Christmas party at 3.00, then I have to get ready for work!
no way I can come back in here today, so here's what I'm planning to do. I found my daughter's Fisher Price cassette recorder with micro :-) I just finished recording 100 sentences from Level 6 and I'm going to play them back in the car. First I hear the sentence in the native speaker's voice, then my voice comes after it. I can correct my pronunciation and review words at the same time. There's so many subtle nuances in the language. I don't want to miss them. I haven't done very well with the flashcards. I'm halfway through one deck of cards. The other deck is sitting untouched on the kitchen table. I had to drink my coffee "on the go" this morning. Maybe i can catch up with the deck later. Will I have time to write today? I'll try to squeeze in 10 minutes. I won't be coming in tomorrow. I don't have to work and I want to devote more time to studying. Hopefully I'll have more to report when I'm done. Starting with yesterday, I came home about 8:30 and watched an episode of AZU MANGA DAIOH. I hardly ever get to watch Japanese TV and since that's a goal of my TAC I thought I'd try it out. I check what I'm hearing with the subtitles; I'm still using them as a crutch. Well, I need to work on listening.
I listened to some old tapes Yookoso! which were at a bargain price at Amazon -- without the text. I got so much listening practice out of those tapes, it's amazing. I went over relative clauses doing dictation. I did Levels 5,6 IKnow! and Level 5 Dictation; Level 3, one round of Brain Speed. I went over kanji cards most of the evening. Grammar review: I read out of old textbooks, the potential form of verbs. I'm recognizing more words. I have no set schedule I just pick up where I left off each day. I'll be logging in every other day, so I don't run the risk of losing too much time here, thread-jumping (it's so tempting). Here's the remainder of my schedule for the day. 10:00 Study whatever I can. 11:00 trip to the pediatrician (time for flashcards?) 12:00 "Mom's taxi", drop by house that's for sale (memo: Self -- don't forget) 1:00 lunch and typical Hausfrau things like helping with homework and cleaning... Aside from the homework part, this is a good time for earphones/listening. 3:00 Yet another Kaffeeklatch-Adventsnachmittag at the school. (memo: Self -- bring coffee mugs) 6:00 time to eat again,.. and then the evening is full of typical family-with-small-children-madness until 8:00 endlich Japanese. I'll be checking in to EDIT in what I actually got accomplished. Should prove interesting! EDIT: didn't make it to the pediatrician but a trip to the drug store solved that. So I have some dictation following this post. I worked on that until 3:00. We just got back and I just finished my dose of Levels 5,6. Maybe I'll sneak back in to do Brain Speed (3,4) after hours. I was able to get through quite a few cards. Not because I had time but because I had my mind on it all day and I was able to pull out a few at a time....
