I've been doing some dictation today. Again, I don't have the text to these dialogues so I can't check for accuracy. My interpretation should be correct, but in case it's not please feel free to offer some suggestions. I'd like to be as accurate as possible. All of the dialogues are about eating and food.
ペギさん一日何回食事をしますか。 Peggysan, how many times do you eat during the day? たいてい2回ですね。 朝 は�� �は食べませですから。 I don't have time for breakfast, so usually 2 times. え-、本当ですか。 どうしてですか。 Really? Why is that? 朝はいそがしくて、あまり時間がないです。 I'm busy in the morning and I don't have time じゃ、昼ごはんは何時ごろ食べますか。 okay, so what time do you eat lunch? ちょっと早いです。 11半ごろですね。 Somewhat early.. at 11:00 たいてい何を食べますか。 What do you usually eat? そうですね。 昼は果物やサラダが多いです 。 Well, for lunch (I eat) a lot of salad and fruit. 晩御飯に何を食べますか。 What do you eat for dinner? たまに肉も食べますが、たいてい野菜と魚で す。Sometimes I eat meat, but (more) often fish and vegetables. ああ、だからペギさんはそ なに スマ-トなん�� �すね。 aah, that accounts for you being so trim, eh? This is a new word for me. I wasn't sure how to write it. I have the alternative here: すまーとな sumâto na So. These are riddles. I don't have the answers but it's not too hard. The first one is watermelon, the second is some kind of sauce that tastes like beef and the third one is of course, ice cream. １．これは夏に食べる果物。大きいです。外 がは緑で、中は赤いです。あなくて、とても 美味しいです。 This is a fruit you eat in the summer. It's large. The outside is green, the inside is red. It's anakute? and really delicious 2. これは肉です。ハンバーガーや、スパゲティ のミ--トソ--スに使います。ス�� �� ��� �� �キの肉と同じですが、安いです。 3. これはデザ・トです。 乳� ��ら作ります� �� �� �� すめれくて甘いです。バニラやチョコ レ� ��やイチゴや、いろいろな味があります。 This is a desert. It|s made from milk. It's made sweet. Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, all sorts of flavors. Here's another one.... ひみこさんはとてもスマ・トですが。ダイエ ットしたことがありますか。himiko, you're really trim. Do you diet? ええ、もちろん。いまもダイエットしていま す。 Sure I do. I'm always dieting. 本当ですか。どんなダイエットですか。 Really? What kind of diet? 豆腐ダイエットです。 Tofu diet. 豆腐ダイエット? Tofu diet? そうです。豆腐はとても体にいいんですよ. Yep. Tofu is really good for you, you know. 僕もそれはしていますけど、。。 Yeah, I know that but... それに私は豆腐が大好きなんです。 Besides that I love tofu. 僕も大好きですけどね。でも、それはどんな ダイエット何ですか。 Yeah, I really like it too, but what kind of diet is it? 私は肉を食べませんから、 豆腐 ステ-キやと�� �� �� �ふバ-ガ-やとうふピザ、 ��ろいろあります� �� �� 。 I don't eat meat so there's tofu steak, tofu hamburger, tofu pizza....all kinds of things (with tofu). 豆腐ステ-キですね。。! Tofu steak, eh? (That sounds pretty good.) それに豆腐のデザ-トも美味しいですよ。Tofu dessert is also delicious. え--?? 豆腐のデザ-ト..? やああ �� ��僕はちょっと。�� �� �。What? Tofu dessert? Okaaay, I'm not sure about that....! わたしがいちばんすきなデ ザ-�� �はとうふパ�� �� �� �です。 My favorite dessert is tofu pie. 豆腐パイ? 甘いんですか? Tofu pie? Does it taste good? そうです。食べたことがありませんか。Sure it does. Have you not not had it? いいえ。うまい豆腐なんて美味しいんでしょ うかね。No. I suppose things (made with) tofu are probably tastey (as well). そうだ本田さん。 今晩一緒にとうふダイエ ットの晩御飯を食べませんか。Exactly, Hondasan! Would you like to go have a "tofu diet" dinner together this evening? え--? あ-あの-、。。僕ちょっと仕事が。.あ -ひみこさん、今日はどうもありがとうご ざいました。。じゃ、左様なら-! Huh? Well, uhm, ...I kinda have to work and... uh, Himikosan, thanks and uh...see you, bye!! I'm not quite finished with 5 and 6 of IKnow!. Christmas is almost upon us. That's why I've been doing a lot of dictation. I get a lot done at once. It's fun, I can hone my listening skills and when I type it in here I get to review some kanji. I did some dialogs with ~to omou and ~to iu but I figure what I have here is enough. I ordered a book for Spanish today -- a really good vocabulary book. 7,000 words with example sentences! Yo, let's do it! EDIT: I've tried editing out the garbage but it just keeps coming. I've tried eliminating all the spaces. I think next time I'll separate the translation. Whether that will help? I won't waste any time on it. Sorry, though. Thanks to Gon-no-suke and others who choose to weed through it. The translations are correct. I added some clarifications:
スマート is correct. It means slim.
甘くて（あまくて） sweet
This could be 挽き肉（ひきにく） or ミンチ, minched meat?
A more literal translation would be "Sure, I'm on a diet right now"

Well this will be my last log entry for a few days at least. It's "family time". That doesn't necessarily mean that I won't show up here to talk about the Spanish paperbacks that I hope to be getting. We'll see! I'm about an hour short of finishing Levels 5,6. I'm currently reviewing Levels 3 and 4 kanji (how quickly I forget). I've made hardcopy lists of about 400 kanji; kana on one side, kanji on the other. Levels 5 and 6 are up for review after I let the words "settle" for a few days. By the time my review of 3-6 is done I'd like to start 7 and 8 again (January). I have to remember that learning new words is easy. Remembering words is hard. I'm trying to get as much exposure as I can through listening and reading. I'm basically reading snippets from grammar books and sentences from IKnow!. Today I shadowed all of the Level 4 sentences. I also watched a couple of episodes of Azu Manga Daioh. It may not be enough to keep me on top of 1200 kanji and I'm devising a way to quiz myself so that I can see if I need to increase my input. I don't care much for SRS. I prefer my old dictation recorder. I record the words in the native speaker's voice and play it back. If I can recall it instantly on two different occasions chances are good that I won't forget them. The only way to remember kanji is exposure -- that's what I'll be working on. I've updated the first post to reflect changes in my goals for Spanish. I don't plan on making Spanish part of my "newspaper/TV" goal -- it's the Spanish television that I don't think I'll be able to manage. Who knows. I may surprise myself. I just received two books for Christmas (see book list, first post).
Everyone is sleeping right now. I've decided to update my TAC goals since our little "contest" is well under way. I've outlined everything that is to be annihilated in my first post. That said, I've spent the past half hour savoring the first two chapters of my first Spanish novel. I'm really slow. I like to read the page for gist, then I go back and slowly pick out and dissect every unknown word and grammar point that I can find. I can't wait to check out Chapter 3 but that will have to wait. I have to go back to Japanese. I plan to review the 200 kanji from Level 4 today. It's Levels 1-6 review and listening practice until January -- that's the point when I have to move on. I started playing around in the forum and made a review of a website recommended by unzum. I provided the link so I don't have to go over it again.
I'm still having trouble with some words like 評価,(evaluation) 処理 (process) these words keep eluding me somehow so I'm going to have to work with them a little longer. Level 4 also has some words I just can't get over. I went back to Levels 7 and 8 yesterday. I started writing out the sentences of each new word. I'm going to try this because writing out the word in a list didn't work so well. I'm still back-tracking on Levels 3 and 4. It's my on-going task to make my word aquisition more efficient. Some words I learn only once and they stick -- under a set of unusual circumstances. 97% of words I have to work with. Anyway we'll see if writing out the context works. I come into contact with more kanji this way so if anything it increases my input. I'm getting psyched up for immersion. I really need to plan a few days. With the holidays and the kids, my mom being here -- there's no immersion in sight until the holidays are over and ......hey.....maybe on the 1st of Jan.!! Everybody will be sleeping that morning! Except for my two-year-old. Well. That will have to do anyway. Okay. It's settled. Jan. 1st. Everybody in the family will be recovering. I'm getting ready for my tiny bit of Japanese immersion tomorrow. My family wants to go out and light fireworks tonight. I have nothing against fireworks. I love 'em! But it's about 4 below and we don't have a yard. We have to walk to an open field -- BRRRR!
I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of action there's gonna be here in a few hours. Not here in the forum, no, I'm not crazy enough to be here on New Year's. no, I want to know who's staying awake in our street. It's mostly retirees. Their houses will be dark. There's one family that will be awake and active. Last year the grandmother herself was lighting fireworks on the balcony. Anyway. I took a quiz today with my book 日本語能力試験、３・４級。I put it away last spring after I figured I wasn't going to be able to take the JPLT 3 this year. I went ahead and did the kanji reading part. 漢字読み方。 Out of 200 questions (問題1-5) I missed 素直、健康、ご用件 (I think), and I misspelled 十一歳。So I'm pretty happy about that. I'll try to do the 漢字書き方 part tomorrow, but I've got some other things planned for my Japanese immersion. I'm writing as many sentences as I can. 10 sentences out of Level 3, 2 quiz paragraphs from Minna, (Unzum's site recommendation), and 50 sentences from Levels 7,8. If I can keep up the pace the next two weeks before school starts I'll be ready for the next shift in my studies. After school starts I'll be doing more listening and less writing/reading. It was indeed a long night and.. *YA-WN* I've been busy with Japanese. It started way after the kids were in bed and my husband decided to make scrambled eggs at 3:30am. We'd been talking all night long and watching the light show from our front door. It was 4:00 when I fell asleep.
Then my two-year-old fell out of bed at 7:30 and I was up again. A quick shower and I started with my Japanese immersion. I plopped my daughter in front of an episode of the "Wiggles" and finished writing out 50 sentences for Levels 7,8. I've started using a workbook from JFBP which I never opened because there's hardly any kanji. I need some grammar practice so I went through the first few lessons today. Here's what I practiced ~がします、~そうですよ 私の国はKohlrabiという野菜があります。トマ のような形ですが、食べるとキャベツのよ な味がします。 営業時間は午前８版から午後１２までだそう ですよ。 電車、遅いですね。駅で事故があったそうで すよ。 それで電車は...? ３０分ほど遅れているそうですよ。 I won't write out the rest. I increased my input yesterday and...I like it. I'd like to do it again. The thing is, Mom is leaving in a few days so I need to spend time with her today.
I've made myself a little schedule which will continue for the next week or so. In other words, I won't be logging in every day. That also eats at my time simply because I can't seem to stifle the urge to look around in the forum and I loose a lot of study time posting in random threads. My input has to remain high if I'm going to get anywhere with Spanish or Japanese. So here's my plan -- for Japanese. I'm going through Japanese in Mangaland III for grammar tidbits and doing the practice excercises out of JFBP Workbook (to the main text) III. I hope to finish both of those in 2-4 weeks. I'm writing all the sentences out of my daily lessons from Levels 7,9 and I'm going through old lessons just for practice. (At least 50 sentences per day) Writing sentences works better than the word lists. I come into contact with contextual kanji like "utsusu" with "shashin" -- I can see which words are most often used together. I'm conviced this is the way improve my recognition of these words. If I can stay on top of my current rate of new word aquisition I might start Level 9,10 within 2-4 weeks. That would put me with a finished (IKnow!) word level of 2000 at the end of February -- at the latest.
