This is a place to read "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald together and to discuss it. Please post unrelated things in the other Multilingual Lounge threads or your personal language-learning log. To learn more about HTLAL's book clubs, read this thread.
You want to participate? Here's how: 1. Get the book, either in the original English or in a language of your choice. You can probably find it in a local book store, you can definitely find it in an online book store and there's even a free online text. 2. Start reading. 3. Post a lot, in any language. Tell us what you just read, what you expect to happen next, how you like the book so far, what words or sentences you have trouble with, what method (if any) you are using to go through the book, or anything else you want to share. 4. Try to finish the book within a month. The group will start reading the book on March 5th 2009. 5. Prepare for the next book. Next month, we are planning to read "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, a modern American novel that has already become a classic. I read the first chapter yesterday and I really like the very beginning, where the person telling the story is pondering some advice given by his father 'Whenever you feel like criticizing any one' he said "just remember that all the people in this people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." This is rather cryptic advice, but I want to read more.

Well, I got the book delivered in the post the other day and started reading a little bit, but since I had another gem, "The Keys of the Kingdom" by AJ Cronin, included in the same delivery I couldn't resist starting on that one first. I remember liking it enormously when I read it many years ago, and now of course I just had to give in to my impatience, having finally gotten my hands on it again.

What a coincidence! I just finished reading The Great Gatsby for my English class (in high school). I personally loved the book but am going to avoid commenting on the ending for obvious reasons. Fitzerald has a vast vocabulary and it certainly shows! Character descriptions are in-depth and the first-person narration was my favorite aspect of the book. Hopefully, other users will enjoy the book as much as I did.

I just finished reading this for the second time, but I just found out we're gonna read it next week at school. A bit annoying, but still a great book.
I kinda wish it would have focused a bit more on the Nick-Jordan relationship, but I can understand why it doesn't. The second time I read it, I got a lot more out of it than before. A really (scarily at some times) realistic portrayal of twenties life. One of my favorite books. At times I wanted to just grab some of the characters by the shoulders and shake them haha. :D 1 person has voted this message useful |
