*Deep breath* Wow, its been about 5 years since I studied any Spanish. If you haven't read my post "My history with languages" post yet, please do. It explains about my unfortunate encounter with the Spanish language. Anyway, I decided that its time to stop avoiding Spanish, its just a couple hundred-thousand words and some grammar afterall, whats there to be afraid of? Okay, so hopefully, today, my package will arrive from Amazon.com bearing my new Spanish books. I ordered "The Complete Book of Starter Spanish (Pre-K to Gr 1)" "The Complete Book of Spanish (Gr 1 to Gr 3)" and "Spanish Level 1--Skillbuilders" Suitable for children who are, I am guesing, on the higher end of the "beginner" ranking. The main reason why I bought these books because they have transliteration/phonetics with them and they are cheaper than the "Flip Flop" series, even though thats a series I'd REALLY like to get. Anyway, this time I'm learning along with the kids and have a few other resources available to me. But my goal is to learn all the words and rules in this book within a few weeks. Okay, so there is only ONE WEEK left of school. Then I can dive into my independant studies!
I have 3 weeks of break time between finishing my vocational training and starting community college. I plan to use that time to do two things: 1) Get ahead start on my classes by going through the text books and taking notes. 2) Studying personal interest subjects (Spanish, Quran, ASL, Math/Algebra, Esperanto* etc.). I cant wait! *I'md not sure how to go about studying 2 languages regularly on my own... 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Okay, I'm alive! Alive and still learning. I got the books from Amazon, looked through them and thought they were great but I wasn't able to get my group of little kid study buddies organized so I had to keep postponing using the book. Finally I got the books out during the summer and began to try and make copies but the copier was broken so I set all the booklets up and put them away...when I went to get them about a month later, they were gone, and I haven't been able to find them since...huh?
Anyway, I'm currently taking Spanish I in college and so far so good. The spelling is a little hard for me, simply because one) I haven't been applying myself and 2) I keep defaulting to English spelling. Arrgh!!! I am always in the Lang tutoring room, getting help and practice from the tutors in there and I go to lab about twice or thrice a week but lab .es muy aborrida!!- (Very boring) So far I have a high 'B' in SPN so I'm happy. I'm not sure if I got an A or a B on the test I took this morning though, I'm really not sure. This semester has been hard because my house is such a mess due to renovations making us have to fit a whole house worth of items in half a house worth of space, its crazy! Hopefully this will all be sorted out by next year though and I will be able to start the new semester off in a new room. Crush: Up until recently I didn't have many opportunities. I practice SPN irregularly with one other Spanish student (shes in SPN 3 and I'm in SPN 1 so she is more of a mentor for me and stuff)
Today however I met students from Mexico, Chile, Panama and Spain. La nina de Mexico ella habla a mi: You help me with English, I help you with Spanish. I hope to work out some sort of schedule where I can practice speaking and listening to real live Spanish twice a week with a native speaker. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Encouraging results!!!
Okay, today after the Parade of Nations on my schools campus I was helping to straighten up when I heard and (almost) understand a minor exchange in Spanish between a Panamanian and Mexican student. It only caught my attention because I thought someone was saying my name (Siya) but really she was saying Silla (Chair in Spanish). What caught me off guard was that I thought the girl speaking was of Asian decent because of her name, but I heard and understand "Chairs...door...we need..." I looked over to see who had called me when I say another girl go to move a chair from the door way. I grinned realizing what had just happened! Also, just a little while ago I was reading a thread here titled "Porque hablas espanol" and I was delighted that I was able to understand darn near everything I read on the first page. I'm on break from school. I'll take Spanish II in the Spring and I may take Spanish III in the Fall of 2010, but only if I still need the class. I'm going to try and go through the last 2/3's of the textbook that I use at school this semester with the aid of the tutors.
I'm going through my textbook during the break, reviewing the grammar and vocabulary I learned, I'm going to try and learn all the spelling by doing those classic write each word 5x drills that we all know and love so much </sarcasm>. I need to work on reflexive verbs, stem changers and comparisons. Those are the three things that I dont feel that I really "get" yet so thats what I'm going to be focusing on as much as possible. To aid me I have a video "Standard Deviants Advanced Spanish Verbs" and a book "The Everything learning Spanish book" On top of that I have Spanish work books also that I want to start going through and I'm going to be reading from my book Easy Spanish Reader and my Spanish version of the Disney Pocahantos book also. I hope to have completed ALL these materials by the end of the Spring semester 2010. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Okay, so I'm getting ready for Spanish two. I haven't reviewed my Spanish I weaknesses yet so thats what I'm going to start doing as soon as I get off this computer and get a fire going.
Then I've gotta do spelling drills and read about those reflexives, comparisons and conjugate all my stem changers. MY goal is to make between 95 and 100% in Spanish II this coming semester. My main weakness last fall was spelling so I really need to drill that. Plus, I'm getting started with Japanese soon so that should be an adventure. 1 person has voted this message useful |
