I've been learning Spanish for the past year. I did half of FSI programmatic Spanish and I'm 10 lessons short of finishing Assimil Spanish with Ease. I can hold basic conversations in Spanish and I can understand maybe 70 percent of what I hear on the news.
I want to start learning Brazilian Portuguese because I play bossa nova/samba and I would like to be able to sing in Portuguese as well. I will maybe do just 30 minutes a day and I won't combine different methods at once (Pimsleur first then FSI) to give me enough time to practice my Spanish. Is it too soon to start Portuguese and will it mess up my Spanish? Any tips for learning related languages simultaneously? I think that it doesn't matter which level you could fit yourself into, it's quite inevitable that you'll end up getting puzzled regarding some words, false cognates involving Portuguese and Spanish.....in my view, I'd never say it's late or early for learning a determined language......if you like one of the main Brazilian rythms (bossa nova is nice but it hasn't been treasured the way as it should be) why don't you make a try by studying my mother tongue?.....it might be confusing for you initially, but I bet you'll get used to the similarities between those languages....even though they're not thaaaat similar.....if you have more doubts I'm eager to help you out.

Thanks for your encouragement. I just had a conversation with my songwriting teacher about bossa nova songs in English. He is an American and he literally said that English sucks for bossa nova. We both agreed that when you get used to hearing the original versions in Portuguese, you don't want to listen to the English versions anymore.
I just made a whole song and I'm hesitant to write the lyrics in English but Alvinho your scenario might sway me to do otherwise. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
