In my opinion you wont confuse the languages whenever you start. They are simliar but I think too many people tend to think they are more similar than they really are, I never had a problem with mixing up the languages or forgetting words, just that instead of when I didn't know a word in portuguese I'd use the Spanish word instead of the English word. You tend to speak more portuñol than portuguese with English.
