Things going steadily well of late. Have noticed just a small improvement in regards to comprehension and speaking. Of course this is due to mostly being and working around French people. Just this week I have had two language exchanges, I have another tomorrow and perhaps one on the weekend.
There is one majorish problem that I have to work on a little. I make the very common and unforgivable mistake of addressing complete strangers, passer-byers, random strangers with the 'Tu' form. It's a result of habit and it's often embarrassing or confusing for the person. They (the French) can see immediately that you are a foreigner. People kind of catch you by surprise and you have to respond without reflection hence my errors.
I have finished listening-reading only my second novel of the year. It was hardly a long book, no outstanding achievement, just 5 hours. I've dived into a slightly longer book to L-R next. If I manage to squeeze in 20 minutes each way on my daily commute and 20 minutes before bed each night I should have the book finished in 8 days. Won't be kicking myself if I don't get things like this done. I'm literally living, working, breathing French. But nevertheless.

Had a cancelled language exchange so have a bit of free time to give an update.
I think very shortly I'm going to sign myself up for the DALF C1 exam. For those who don't know here is an idea
Quote:
The DALF C1 and C2 for the proficient user validates fluent and spontaneous communication skills at highest level and include specialized topics, chosen by the candidate himself. Candidates who have been awarded the DALF C1 or DALF C2 are exempted from language entrance examinations in French Universities. |

Or to put it in perspectives of time,
Quote:
DELF A1 : 60 hours from Beginner level
DELF A2 : 160 hours from Beginner level (100 hours from DELF A1
DELF B1 : 310 hours from Beginner level (150 hours from DELF A2)
DELF B2 : 490 hours from Beginner level (180 hours from DELF B1)
DALF C1 : 690 hours from Beginner level (200 hours from DELF B2)
DALF C2 : 890 hours from Beginner level (200 hours from DALF C1)

Well I think that what's interesting about getting this certificate is not having to undergo a language test before going into a university. Also once you get this certificate its for life. It also means you're pretty much autonomus and can handle yourself in almost any situation. I feel quite far from that, but from what i've seen its kind of easy to bluff your way through parts of these exams. Just in regards to hours I've done waaayyy more than 690 hours. I've done at least 3 times more than that over the past 3 and a half years. The time actually refers to actual teaching hours. I guess they don't want to put the teaching hours at 1000+ hours as that may be a bit off putting.

Is it just me, or is it not possible to edit your older posts anymore? I can edit the last 2 or 3 but any older than that and it's not an option. I have kept a list of films watched and books read since the start of the year and I edit the post to keep a kind list of materials used. It is on the first page of this blog. I'm going to transfer it here and add any missing material before I forget what I did.

Just a quick summary of the last week and a glimpse at the week to come.
I had a total of 3 language exchanges last week, about 3 1/2 hours of good solid French. It will be pretty much the same thing this week.
Saw two films the last couple of days. Watched a dubbed Millenium, the first part. Last night I watched another Rohmer film called Les nuits de la pleine lune. I actually found a real bargain today in a well known book store here in Paris. Normally buying DVD's is not something I can afford or I don't like in general to keep lots of things, but 6 films from a well known director for 13 euros. I had to look twice at the price because it seemed ridiculously inexpensive compared to everything else.
Steady going with L-R, managing to squeeze in about an hour each day. Fortunately books compared to other things in Paris are outrageously inexpensive. You can make the choice between having an espresso on a terrase or buying four classics if you know where to look. I think sometimes it's important to stop for a coffee on a terrase though, right?
I had to buy a monthly transport pass and speak briefly with a bus driver today. Normally two things I wouldn't have a problem with. However today, me - "bonjour, blah blah blah," them - *look of disbelief*. I felt crushed...for about two minutes, I can smile about it now but at the time it was terrible. Really the things which are apparently simple like ordering tickets and food are still so hard for me in comparison to just having a chat with someone.

I don't want to spend too much time on writing this post, that doesn't mean I won't write a lot. I can do the post a la Keourac but with more grammar and paragraphs.
Well a little over 4 months living the dream of the immersion experience in France now. Working living and overall communicating with the French. I should be fantastic by now shouldn't I? Well no not exactly. I was just talking to someone the other day about how I feel I'm regressing as I'm progressing. I think that I reached a high point when I was in school two months ago. I was doing the practical and theoretical each day. I was doing the simple things out of school and progressing and learning something each day in school. I felt I hit a good point of growth and now I'm kind of in language decline in a sense.
It's not all bad I'm progressing in some ways. I think slowly slowly my reactions are kind of becoming automatic. For example with numbers. When I think back to day one, yes there has been some improvements.
I think concentrated study and a clear focused goal to work towards will be sufficient to once again move positively forwards. I know what the goal is, the DALF C1 exam. I just need to register for an exam not too soon or far away and make the commitment to real and quality study. Once I have this sweet diploma in my hands it's for life.
Apart from my whimsical thoughtlessness, I have some solid stuff I've actually done. I've continued with my language exchanges, I tend to say yes even when I mean no sometimes, hence 4 languages exchanges in one week the other week. It was a mission in scheduling and endurance. I've decided to stick with the partners I've got and keep it to two exchanges a week.
I saw three French films without subtitles since my last post all by the same director Claude Lelouch. Of the three I can recommend one in particular 'les uns et les autres' (or Bolero in English.) Kind of a musical spanning from 1940 to the 1980's stretching from France to Russia to America. Besides films I've also L-Red Le Petit Chose by Alphonse Daudet (9 hours).

I think focusing on the DALF would definitely be a good thing now. Just imagine how sweet that diploma would be sitting on your wall by the end of the year. I'm pretty sure you'd pass it with flying colours, once you learn the layout and prepare with some past papers.
How's the job going, by the way?
