Well, completely missed my goals this time around. Went away for the weekend and didn't get anything done Friday/Saturday and very little Sunday. Blah :)
I did finish Michel Thomas and I'm through lesson 42 of Assimil with plans to complete 43 before I go to bed. I will update again once I complete 49 with my plans for the active phase. Well, now that I've watched the Vikings lose...
Status (Passive) 53 lessons of Assimil completed (Active) 2 lesson of Assimil completed 464 sentences in SRS Thoughts My 2 new favorite words... ciudad cuidado I have no problem recognizing ciudad as I have seen it many, many times. Unfortunately, that has translated into seeing cuidado as ciudad as well which leads to horrible, horrible pronunciation. Hopefully by writing about it here it'll get straightened out in my head. Also curious how useful the active phase of Assimil will end up being. I have read about it in the main forums and it sounds like the benefit is that it forces you to slow down and really analyze the sentence. I am wondering, though, if it is better to translate from English -> Spanish (what the instructions seem to indicate) or just write the Spanish sentence and ignore the English side as much as possible. Basically force myself to stop translating. Not sure what will work best... (Passive) 60 lessons of Assimil completed (Active) 10 lesson of Assimil completed 533 sentences in SRS Thoughts Updated the first post with my January results. I didn't quite hit my goals, but on the positive side I made some good progress and I'm still interested in Spanish. Going to change this up a bit for February. Towards the end of the month I started to get a little burnt out on Assimil, but since my goals stated I had to work on Assimil, that is what I did. For February, I'm going to try DaraghM's time based approach (see post 12 and 13). Goals 10 hours spent on Spanish this week Still plan to use Assimil, both active and passive. But I'll allow myself to spend time on children's books, newspaper articles, etc as a replacement. Main thing is to keep on learning. I hope you enjoy the time based approach for February. I think you've a better system, in that, you are varying the type of goals month on month.

Hit my goal of 10 hours for the week. (Passive) 70 lessons of Assimil completed (+10) (Active) 20 lesson of Assimil completed (+10) 686 sentences in SRS (+153) Read through El León que se Vio en el Agua a couple times. Thoughts Well, first, I liked the time based approach (thanks DaraghM). I think I made more progress this week than I have the last couple but I didn't feel bogged down with the whole "I must do xyz" which is very nice. For me, starting to study is the hard part. Once I begin, I get into it and next thing I know an hour has gone by. Since mentioning 'ciudad' and 'cuidado' worked previously... I think I screw up the 'he' every time I read a sentence like 'he dicho' or 'he comprado' because my English kicks in and makes it 3rd person instead of 1st. My brain quickly catches up and realizes it was wrong, but it breaks up the flow a bit. Last item is a sentence from Assimil that I ran across while going through the active phase (lesson 18/lección deiciocho): El niño le miraba (Translation given: The child was looking at him) The part I'm not 100% on is why it is 'le' instead of 'lo' since I would think "him" would be the direct object. Of course now that I go through Assimil's review lesson, I see they have a part about how it is common to use 'le' instead of 'lo' as a direct object (DO). So either I am completely mixed up about DO/IDO and 'le' is required or this is a case where either 'lo' or 'le' would be acceptable. Now that I think about it, that does seem incorrect. You can use the indirect object with mirar if you're referring to a part of somebody's body. E.g. El niño le miraba los dientes - The child looked at his teeth. (Someone else teeth) However, El niño lo miraba, would translate "The child was looking at him\it." 9 hours of Spanish this week (hour short) (Passive) 78 lessons of Assimil completed (+8) (Active) 29 lesson of Assimil completed (+8) 794 sentences in SRS (+104) 1 chapter out of my grammar book Thoughts Had a long week of work which reduced some of my planned study time. So hitting 9 hours was ok. This week won't be any better since I have work related classes for 8 hours a day Monday - Thursday. Blah :) Didn't spread myself out much from Assimil, although I did spend a little time on a grammar book I have. It ends up being a few pages of text with 5+ pages of exercises. Not exactly the most fun ever, but since most of the exercises, including instructions, are in Spanish I do pick up some new words and get some much needed writing practice. I was also able to listen to approximately 45 minutes of a Spanish radio station out of the Twin Cities on Saturday. I'm not to the point where I can even pick up half of what was said, but but days of the week, numbers, occasional words, and some of the advertisements were in my range. Most encouraging part was that I could hear the separating of words instead of them all running together into an unintelligible mess.
