9 hours of Spanish this week (Passive) 86 lessons of Assimil completed (+8) (Active) 37 lessons of Assimil completed (+8) 886 sentences in Assimil (+92) Thoughts Tried to watch some Children's TV on Saturday but quickly gave up as I couldn't understand much. I expect with subtitles I'd pick up a lot more. At my current rate, I'll complete the passive phase of Assimil within the next month so I'm starting to give some thought on where to go next. I still want to complete the active phase and I might even do a 3rd run through focusing on the audio only. As far as reading goes, I have a bunch of parallel text stories I can ready plus there is always the news so that isn't a problem. The listening/speaking part is tougher. I can, and should, use something like United Nations Radio but that isn't going to be conversational Spanish. FSI would be another option although I've found it a bit dry in the past. Any suggestions, let me know. I figure I'll check the main forums a bit too, see what I can find. I've found my time spent there has dropped considerably since I'm not procrastinating (as much). Goals 6 hours spent on Spanish. Heading out of town Friday so I'm admitting defeat on my goal of 40 hours in February. updated 1st post with my February results
I've been slacking off a bit lately which was pretty evident when I opened up Anki and almost 1/8 of my sentences were due :) Will get back to it tonight. I feel like I need to set some sort of goal for March to keep myself focused/motivated. Since I'm about 20 lessons away from finishing passive Assimil, I think I'll try and crank that out over the next couple weeks and go from there. Ran across something interesting yesterday...
Watched this video and realized there were Spanish subtitles available. Looks like quite a few languages actually. Not sure I learned a lot, but made it a bit more worthwhile by turning those and reading along with the English lecture. En suma, siempre puedes utilizar "lo" como objeto directo y "le" sólo en España (no sé si se emplea en todas las provincias ni si hay reglas para gobernarlo). In Spain the "leísmo" is a lot more common, usually to replace the masculine pronoun. That´s why you´ll hear phrases like "I called him but he didn´t answer me, later I saw him in the supermarket". In Latin America/South America you won´t hear it (or if you do it won´t be considered correct). To sum up, you can always use "lo" as the direct object, and "le" only in Spain (I´m neither sure if it´s used in all provinces nor if there are rules to govern it). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Thanks Crush, both for the explanation and writing it in Spanish.
Anyway, I'm still alive although we might as well call March the lost month. I think I spent a total of 5 hours, prior to today, studying Spanish in the entire month which is rather terrible. For that reason, I've decided today is April -4 (yes, that is a negative). Sooner I get out of March, the better :) I completed a couple Assimil lessons today and finished 2 lessons from Pimsleur 2 that I picked up from the library. Spent some time catching up on my SRS which whittled down the sentences due to 300. I'm still not 100% sold on its usefulness, but I'll stick with it for now since it brings up uncommon words/constructions that I wouldn't see often otherwise. Plan for the month of April, starting today, is to average an hour of day of studying. Might try posting a little more often just to keep myself honest. So much for updating more often :) My study time has picked up over the last week though so that is a positive.
I'm finding Pimsleur 2 rather easy so far. I already covered a lot of words with Michel Thomas or Assimil so there really isn't anything new, its just putting the sentences together repeatedly and drilling it in. Not my favorite thing ever, but its good for when I'm walking the dog. I do sometimes wonder what the neighbors think of me wandering the streets muttering to myself. I expect they'd be more comfortable if they knew it wasn't because I'm crazy :) As far as Assimil goes, I'm in the 100s now so less than 10 lessons to go for Spanish With Ease passive phase. I'd like to get back into the active portion to drill a bit more and also review by just listening. Other than the two above, I've spent a little more time with one of my parallel-text books but I think I lose something by not having audio. Plus, there are quite a few words that come up that I'd like more information on rather than a 1 word translation. My other time sink has been Radio ONU where I've been listening to a story, copying the text, and adding notes in the margins for unknown words (not as many as I had expected). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Still catching up on my SRS...sitting at about 350 sentences to review. Ouch :) Doesn't help that I've added approximately 150 over the last few days. I've also found that, due to my slacking in March/early April, many of the sentences have words that are no longer familiar to me so I need to review them a couple times instead of having them pop up again in 2+ months.
Since my last update, I finished Assimil passive so I'm back to the active phase plus I'm going to do some listening only. Still not sure what my best option would be to improve my listening comprehension ONU (see previous post) is rather fast and some of the vocabulary used is very specialized. For now I figure I'll continue with Pimsleur 2 (speaking/listening) and perhaps try El Principito for listening/reading. I've kicked around trying FSI as well although, as I believe I mentioned previously, it is not my favorite program. 1 person has voted this message useful |
