Wow just stumbled across this. Its really helpful especially considering the trouble I've had finding good Arabic sources online. Thanks a ton!

IMHO, this is course is probably not very helpful for absolute beginners, because the chapters only contain word lists and dialogs in which the new words are used, but no Grammar explanations. The approach reminds me a bit of the direct method.
The only positive thing is that the word lists and the dialogs are read by a native speaker. However, he reads the words with an Egyptian pronunciation (ج = /g/) and he's definitely not a professional speaker.

This isn't strictly an online reader but I wanted to post in the event others might benefit.    During March this year Mahmoud Ghaffar and Jane Wightwick put out a book called the 'Easy Arabic Reader (Easy Reader Series)'.     It is a fabulous little book and the audio is available on line....definitely a 5 star project at minimal cost...would highly recommend.

Yes, that is a great book too. Got mine from Amazon last week:
Easy Arabic Reader

I also got these great books for Arabic vocabulary:
Arabic Vocabulary Made Easy Business, Military, and Media Arabic
Arabic Vocabulary: Using mnemonics to remember a huge list of Arabic vocabulary

Thanks translator2, those other two books look really interesting...I must admit, vocab can be difficult to retain so anything that helps is always welcome...off to purchase....

I've just had a quick look at these two books (i.e.
Arabic Vocabulary Made Easy Business, Military, and Media Arabic
Arabic Vocabulary: Using mnemonics to remember a huge list of Arabic vocabulary
) and would just say that I think the pronunciation guide in them is terrible. It says things like Arabic ق is pronounced much as an English q!! and it even give the names of the Arabic letters incorrectly (e.g. it says ط = Taad!!).

I understand what you are saying Andrew C....when I looked at some of the examples and then the transliteration I thought, 'mmm...' however, the idea behind this book is good. I have tried to come up with mnemonics myself and was only successful for a few but am really not that creative...perhaps this book will help spark my mind to create some.
