The Romani taught in Lee's book is Vlax Romani, and not related to the North American dialects.

Thank you!
And yes ellasevia I'm indeed very lucky :). Plus my uncle says that they are somewhat of language nerds themselves,
so perhaps they will help me with Romani (and later Polish), as I help them with their German and English.

Haha, you are now the only one on the forum who is listed as actually studying Romani. My friend also has an account on here, but rarely logs in and I couldn't convince her to update her profile to include it.

ruskivyetr, I too am jealous. The only reason I stopped is that I realized I would never be in a situation to use it.

But Romani is such a beautiful language.. the most fascinating that I have ever studied. Good luck, and keep us posted about your progress (so we can at least live vicariously through you :) ).

EDIT: I should mention that Lee's book uses a non-standard phonetic spelling, one which should be more familiar to speakers of western european languages. This shouldn't trip you up though as Romani is primarily an oral language to start with, and there's really no standardized spelling yet anyway. Nevertheless you'll want to learn the other romanizations and the cryllic alphabet eventually.
