I second this. You can respect someone but have a total hatred for them (not that I'm saying I have this for theirishpolyglot, I actually admire him). An example would be sports, you could respect a rival team's ability yet hate their guts.

Well, I guess in this case it comes down to "respect those 'older' and wiser, but don't
let the respect prevents you from trying the things yourself" :), especially if it
doesn't cost you much (and if you are learning languages just because you like them, I
don't see how an experiment can 'cost you much'). That is to say, although I enjoy
reading about the experiences and advices from the 'big names', there's no way I wouldn't
try something I wish to try simply because some of them do not advise that :D.

I'd also second this :)
Something may not work for them but it may work for you, people are different.
