This weekend, I went to Toronto to participate in a TV show called 16x9 produced by
GlobalTV
(website), which is preparing a
segment on Canadian hyperpolyglots, following the
publication of Michael Erard's book, Babel No More.
We were five people participating in the discussion: Steve Kaufmann, Keith Swayne
(Youtube Channel:
CanadianLinguist), Axel Van Goud, James
Cheng and myself. And boy was it ever fun! It's not everyday you get to speak with such
talented language learners and we touched upon a
variety of fascinating subjects! We spoke for a total of close to 3 hours on a variety
of questions concerning polyglots and language
learning.
The show will be aired nationally on Global TV on May 5th as a condensed 15-minute
version, and shorter 2-minute clips will be broadcast
on the national news. |

Thanks for the info, Arekkusu; I'm looking forward to watching it! After the show's been broadcast,
could you perhaps fill us in on some other highlights/details that didn't make the 15-minute cut?

Well, we talked for 3 hours... I'm not sure how many details I'll be able to remember
in a month's time... but I'll try. One thing that was interesting is that we were
polarized on a few issues or personal characteristics, but that the divisions were never
between the same people.
Also, I know there's been threads here that have shown most members to be introverts, but
all five of us were obviously extroverts!

Maybe I should rectify my previous comment about us all being extroverts. I should say we
were all very passionate and spoke candidly and openly on the subject of language
learning even in front of the camera; that wouldn't preclude any of us from being
introverts.

For the longest time, I was reluctant to post videos or create a Youtube channel, as many others here have done. After participating in a panel discussion destined to be broadcast on national primetime TV, there's not much point in holding back anymore.
Until I figure out what to talk about (!), here's an unassuming video of me singing Border Song, posted about year ago.

Steve Kaufmann briefly mentions our TV discussion on his
blog.

Hey, you have been holding back on us! I never knew you had such a great voice! You are also the only
French speaker I have ever heard who at least for me sound like you have a native English accent.

For the record, you can't rely on this for my accent... I was singing, not talking, and it came out weird in many
places... But thanks for the compliment :)

This month, I decided to give Yabla German and Spanish a try. I'm surprised there aren't more people talking about Yabla on this forum because it's a really good system. It works on the iPad too, but without the slow down function. I see they've recently added Chinese, and I might give that a try too. The only problem is that I've been extremely busy lately (this week is nuts), so I have almost no free time at all, but I hope it will improve from next week on.
I did notice that Germans verbs with separable prepositions are not recognized as such in their dictionary, but it's not that hard to figure out. It's a pretty good indication though that if they ever get Japanese, the dictionary feature will be useless.
