Been a month since the last post.
Book is doing very well, better than I would have expected. Exploring the possibility of working on another course on Japanese pitch accent. We'll see what comes of it. Still doing some Japanese, watching some shows, browsing online, some conversations. I need to find a new partner. One person is considering but may be too busy. Preparing for my trip to Germany after Christmas. I will be attending the JES Esperanto week after Christmas and will be giving 2 presentations in Esperanto. After that, I will be spending a week in Berlin practising German, hoping to meet a few other HTLALers. I try to write in German on Lang-8, in emails, to watch some TV shows. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Lately, I've been toying with the idea of tackling Italian in the new year. I think a few dedicated months would suffice since I have some past background with Italian (2 semesters in Cégep 20 years ago).
I was just listening to this conversation between Luca and Robert and I understood close to everything, so I can't imagine reviving it should be too hard. I should try to find a coach locally. We'll see if this materializes. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It's the end of the year, time to re-evaluate my languages and future goals.
Many people have given me all kinds of evaluations over time, many of which were probably higher than they should have been, in part because fluency tends to be one of my stronger abilities and fluency can often trick people. I feel the need to re- evaluate these assessments. Establishing a proper level is difficult; I’ll do my best. French -- Native. Québec French, to be precise. English -- C2, near-native. I occasionally do conference interpretation from and into French and English. German -- B2. Biggest problem here is atrophied vocabulary. I’ve been working on that for the last 2-3 weeks and will be spending 2 weeks in Germany over the holidays, so it should help come closer to C1. Esperanto -- B1/B2. I started learning Esperanto seriously about a month ago, although I did maybe two weeks of study a year earlier. I’m not quite B2, but almost. I will be attending the JES event in a few weeks -- a week-long event, practicing Esperanto all day long --, and I hope to make it into C1 territory. Spanish -- B1/B2 orally, maybe C1 comprehension. Used to be C1, got rusty over the years. Probably my language I use the least, though I’ve been attending a conversation group lately, but they only meet every 3rd week. I don’t really do any work on Spanish otherwise. Japanese -- B2. Based on Cambridge videos showing the various levels of proficiency, my tutor previously estimated that I was C1, but again, I think fluency might have influenced her evaluation, and I’m probably B2. Vocabulary is probably the biggest issue, as well as lack of access to various levels of politeness in the real world. Most of my contact with native speakers is centered around everyday activities and conversations, so the scope has been limited. Progress has stagnated in the last several months because I’ve been without a language partner, and I’ve been concentrating on German and Esperanto instead (and writing a book over the course of the summer). ---- The next language on the list, although I wouldn't claim to know it, is Italian. Understanding conversations such as this one between Luca and Robert is not really a problem. Active use is another story. I studied Italian 20 years ago and never used it since. If I can find a proper coach or partner, I might attempt to bring this up to par during the first few months of 2013.
