I just saw an interview with him and I do not understand how you can say that he struggles with Spanish. He pronounced a hell of a lot more "s" than I would in my Andalusian dialect, but apart from that he sounds absolutely native to me. There are a lot of different accents within Spain, but I would not have thought twice about declaring him a native Spanish speaker. He comes from Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, and I know for a fact he is a native speaker of Basque.
He didn't start learning Spanish until he was older. Besides having a strong accent as you say, he has problem stringing together phrases. I've watched a couple of Youtube interviews with him in Spanish, and I can't say that he seems to have much more
trouble stringing together sentences and answering questions than other footballers in similar situations. I don't doubt that he's native speaker of Basque or that he didn't learn Spanish at home nor that he feels more comfortable speaking Basque than Spanish, but I haven't seen any evidence that he is actually struggling in Spanish. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

As far as I know,Illaramendi speaks Spanish like a native speaker with a basque accent.
