Hello. This log will record my progress towards the following language goals this year:
German
Goal: expand vocabulary, get more comfortable with reading and speaking.
Reason: have learned for some time now, feel it is a part of me.
Milestone: pass B1 certification exam at the Goethe Institut in Sydney (end of
January).
Milestone: pass B2 certification exam at the Goethe Institut in Sydney (end of
May).
Reached when I: pass C1 certification exam at the Goethe Institut in Sydney (end
of August).
French
Goal: become comfortable in everyday conversational language, reading and
writing.
Reason: getting married in November and going to France for a month for
honeymoon. Fiancee speaks French.
Milestone: pass B1 certification exam at the Alliance Francaise in Sydney (mid
March).
Reached when I: pass C1 certification exam at the Alliance Francaise in Sydney
(mid November).
A few things to mention:
- Entries will be short and quantitative. If you happen to visit, I respect
your time by not waffling on aimlessly.
- It's easy to overestimate one's abilities, thus goals are only reached when tested
by an external party. That way both you and I have confidence in my abilities and this
log.
- My approach to German uses materials intended for natives - novels, audiobooks, and
the news, for the most part. I'll use exam preparation guides for the exams as I find
necessary. I'll use FSI to brush up on any weaknesses. I use a Leitner box with paper
flashcards for vocabulary acquisition.
- My approach to French will initially be Michel Thomas during transit and a
grammatical method (Hugo's French in Three Months), which I've gone through two thirds
of in the past. Afterwards, my approach will be identical to my approach with German -
native materials, FSI, and exam preperation guides, with the Leitner box for vocab.
- My TAC team this year consists of OIgen (zenmonkey), Jack (LanguageSponge), Ricardo
(troglodyte) and Jinx (Jinx). I'm looking forward to working with you to achieve your
goals this year.
Please feel free to ask questions regarding progress, my learning method or how to
build Leitner boxes.
Good luck to everybody in the upcoming 2011 Team TAC.
Regards,
Rob.

Impressive goals! As an educator, I really appreciate your clear ways of assessing your progress in your "reached
when I" statements. Think I'll add some of those to my own log.
Good luck with three languages and the TAC.

Hello, Rob!
I'm also looking foward to work with you and the rest of the team.
Anyway, good luck with your studies!
Ricardo.

Hallo Rob,

Hi guys,
After a few days of careful consideration, I'm putting Russian on hold for 2011, and embracing Parkinson's Law by setting myself higher goals in German and French. I've updated my initial post to reflect these changes.
Honestly, I wasn't sure if these new goals (C1 in German and French) were realistically attainable at first, until I had a look over the members of my team. It's going to be a lot of work, but with some help from Team ÇÜ, we just might get there.
I should also add, my current level in German is around B1 at the moment, so the Zertifikat Deutsch at the end of January shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand, my current level in French is somewhere between A1 and A2, so the DELF B1 in mid March should be quite interesting!
See you at the tee-off, then.
Thanks,
Rob.

Just a quick post to encourage you and the other team members!
I very much like your milestones and post structure. Two C1s in a year is agressive but doable. Like you say there will be a lot of work to get there but if you plug away you'll make it.
Your log will be a pleasure to read.
Viel glück, bonne chance!

Projected plan for 2011 TAC study. Red = German, Blue = French. The spikes in the circle are around exam time.
Thanks,
Rob.
