This is the English version of a standard textbook that is used at many German universities. As such it's not really suitable for self-study, because it's meant to be used in a classroom setting. However, if you already have a basic knowledge of Arabic, you might find it useful as a reference grammar.
If you're just starting out with Arabic you're better off with a more conventional beginners' textbook. |

Thank you. At this point, I am vacillating between the French Assimil:

and Ahlan wa Sahlan
http://www.amazon.com/Ahlan-Sahlan-Functional-Standard-Begin ners/dp/0300058543
I am leaning towards Assimil as it geared towards individual learning while a regular textbook may not be. (my French reading is decent enough that I think I could use the French Assimil without much difficulty)
Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with either book. You might want to ask this question in this related thread. Good luck with your studies!

I don't know anything about this book, but it was just released and so far has gotten good reviews on Amazon:

Does anyone know anything about this book? I have Googled but given its age, there is not much out there. I am considering this as a possible text, but am also leaning towards Living Language's Ultimate Arabic. Any thoughts?

It took me awhile to find it ... I knew I had this down somewhere!
TID=29105&PN=2&TPN=2">FSI Audio for Arabic
I don't know what happened to the al3arabiya site, which is too bad, I had found a lot
of good stuff on there. The direct links to the downloads, though, still seem to work.
*************************
I finished Lesson 10 this weekend. It was easy without the audio! But it is getting
seriously dull. There are only so many versions of "The meeting of the president in
Baghdad was successful" that I can stay awake through. I was also starting to feel
that I was going to far out on a limb with my own pronunciation quirks, and needed
something more speaking based to balance out the writing.
And so I decided that I would give Assimil L'arabe an honest shot. And here's
the funny thing: the tapes aren't that bad when you are actively trying to read along
and then repeat the phrases. Just listening to them passively is still painful. But,
and I'm saying this reluctantly, and might rescind this at any time: I do think they
might be useful for where I'm at now. I need something more than the dry dry lessons
of FSI.
So my new plan is to alternate weeks between Assimil and FSI, with some Arabic 101
podcasts thrown in so that I can listen to a pleasant accent to balance them out, and
to remind me that Arabic can sound very elegant with the right accent!

You can see a full table of contents and a pretty extensive (62 pages) sample of Arabic for Life here:
http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=97803001413 13
I'm also very interested in any feedback on this book, or on Wightwick & Gafar's Mastering Arabic.
The local university uses Mastering Arabic Volume 1 for Arabic 101 & 102, and Volume 2 for 201 & 202.
