Following the recent 6 week challenge, which helped me level up my reading skills in Russian a little, my brain seems to have absconded from studies almost altogether and taken an extended sedentary break. Perhaps it's the realisation that reaching the next plateau is a little overwhelming, who knows?! My body, on the other hand, has taken this time to ease itself ever so gradually into a new fitness and healthy eating programme and make some reasonable gains. So next week I'm hoping that both will finally agree to work together and rocket my Russian farther into the deep linguistic unknown...

Haha. I went throgh exactly the same thing! Doing loads of productive things except language studying and course work :D Now I'm teasing my brain with small 5-10 minute language gems every now and then. Sooner or later, I know he will succumb to the temptation and step out of his hiding place. When he does, I'll be quick to catch him before he realizes what's happened. B)

So, I finally got to the end of reading of this log. It is awesome, just like your trans-siberian express.

So very true...maybe it's just that time of year again? Having taken an extended break from language studies since the last 6 Week Challenge, I've managed to make hay whilst the sun still shines in several other side projects. Now it's time to bait the Russian trap again, and catch myself a new study regime. :)

@Cavesa
Thanks for your generous comment, and good luck leveling up in your 4 study languages by the end of the year!

Teango if you are going through a slow time study wise don't let it worry you. I can
assure you that a few weeks off or even a couple of months does little or no harm. You
can, (I'm sure of it now), apply the somewhat athletic definition of peaking, build up
phases, recovery etc.etc...Go have a rest!

Thanks mate, and great to see you back in the game. The truth is I've been up to my eyeballs developing various software lately, so I'm looking forward to taking several weeks off very soon. I often worry that taking so much time off from studies will set me back to square one and render my previous efforts a waste of time. However, you're right on the button about it being more like physical training. I'm always pleasantly surprised by the long-term memory of my hidden language muscles, and usually find myself breaking new boundaries after a good long break. :)

A very nice blog here! Hoping your software developing gets out of the way so you can do something seriously useful, like languages, with your life! :P

I was wondering, what resources do you have for Irish Gaelic? Mine are just Learning Irish (Mícheál Ó Siadhail), a great book, and Irish Grammar Book (Nollaig Mac Congail) which I'm yet to need. I don't know of many more and I want to diversify a bit, even though Mícheál Ó Siadhail is being brilliant.

TAC 2012 up soon. I might apply for that one.

Cheers! Hopefully I'll be able to put in some serious language hours starting tomorrow. :) [edit - perhaps Monday was a little too optimistic, but I still intend to get stuck back into studying by the end of the week...whatever the weather]

And it's great to hear you're studying Irish. So just like a cookery show, here's a little list I made earlier.
