Hebrew has such an awesome script! It looks like it's written with fire.

I can imagine the thrilling feeling of reading the old style Hebrew Bible scroll with no punctuation and no spaces between the verses. Wow.

Now you activated my old script wanderlust. Hebrew, Thai and also Korean and Chinese of course - it ain't easy being a language nerd! ;D

Not forgetting ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, Sanskrit, Arabic calligraphy, and that cool early Chinese/Japanese script you often see used for official seals. Old-style vertical Mongolian script also looks pretty amazing... ;)

Teango, after reading your post again, I just saw that you were almost excusing yourself for only having one old Biblical Hebrew book at hands. This forum is incredible. Old-style vertical Mongolian script... You are forgiven!

Wow! I've never heard of the Mongolian script before. It looks awesome.

And how could I forgot to mention the old Runic alphabet.

Hey Teango! Long since we heard from you.

Hope everything is under control, and that you'll soon get new chances to flex your linguistic muscles.

UPDATE, WEEKS 8-10

I haven't been able to do any language study over the last few weeks as I've been ill. In fact I haven't been able to do much at all apart from ruffle pillows and tot up steroids, today marking my first 48 hours down from temperatures of 104F (40C).

At the moment, it's just good to be able to catch up on things like emails, and reassure readers I haven't done anything crazy like elope aback reindeer to Siberia on a Chukchi language exchange programme over the last month. Still I've got a lot of recovering to do before I'm back on track and my head feels like it's screwed on the right way again.

Glancing over my progress in previous listening and reading projects, it looks like I need to click up to twice the number of words in languages like Russian to reach the same level in Spanish or Swedish. Hence I've decided to follow FSI guidelines and group languages into "easy" and "hard" tracks from now on, which will be reflected in my estimated CEFR reading levels (and Polyjitsu belts ;) ). Establishing more realistic expectations and focusing more on just enjoying the materials I'm using will hopefully go some way to propping up my current flagging motivation levels.

You finished LR-ing Crime and Punishment in Russian - massive achievement, bro!! :D Where do you feel your Russian reading and listening levels are at now? I imagine you must be on a whole new level.

And if you look far down this mountain, way into the distance, like a speck pushing up through the first wisp of gold-tipped cotton vapours, you might see a wonky mountain goat clippety-cloppetying up a rocky stretch and waving back at you unsteadily (as only one can with cloven hooves)...and that'll be me!

@Buttons
The scary thing is that in addition to the occasional flirtation with exotic languages, I DO have an additional organised "naughty box" of wander-resources set up and ready to roll at a moment's notice. Hmm, let me look inside...BSL materials, Polish MT, Greek Pimsleur, Ancient Egyptian Assimil, and even a Lingua Latina CD. It's like Pandora's Box in there...and better kept closed for now.

@ellasevia
Inspired by the layout in your weekly masterpieces, I've decided to add a little splash of colour to my own drab ascii-blots with the inclusion of some hopefully-not-too-conspicuous flag icons. I've tried to make them small, round and friendly - hope you don't mind? :)
