Nogoodnik: yes, I've been playing chess competitively since I was 12 :). In fact, that may be a part of what's inspiring me to learn Russian.
For one, I'll have easy access to Russian speakers through chess, especially once I move to Toronto. But more importantly, I'll be able to discern what my Russian opponents are saying to each other during the game! (it's common practice to walk around and chat during games at these events. One game usually lasts around 5 hours. I always assume they're either getting advice from their superiors or insulting me in some fashion. Pimsleur 1-Lesson 25 Total: 0.5 hrs Grand total: 32.5 hrs I sang 'the impossible dream' for a fundraiser last night. Didn't have much time to study but I managed to squeeze in a Pimsleur lesson. Nope, no one's allowed to interfere in the games except for the tournament director. There's been a lot of talk lately about cheating in the chess world. The French Chess Federation just banned several of its top players for cheating, and here in Canada some kids have been accused of hiding in the bathroom and researching moves on their cell phones (some players even have a chess analysis programs installed on their phones...). I personally don't see the point. The strongest tournaments in Canada usually have a top prize of no more than $500. It's not worth it in my opinion :/ Luckily one can't really cheat in language learning :) 15-23 марта Pimsleur 2-Lesson 1 to 9 --> 2 hr Living Language --> 1 hr Harry Potter 7 in Russian w Eng subs --> 1 hr Twilight Book 1 in Russian --> 0.5 hr Grand total: 39.5 hrs I just realized how easy it is to get subtitles in any language! I didn't have English subtitles for Harry Potter so I googled "harry potter 7 English subtitles". I downloaded one in SRT file (at this point I have no idea what I'm doing and if it'll work or not). I tried loading it with windows media player, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. So I tried it with VLC player (video => subtitles track => load file) and it worked like a charm! The words were offset by about 40 seconds but I corrected that under Tools => Track synchronization and voila! Sooo glad I discovered this :D 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Looks like you are back on tracks!How far did you get with Twilight in half an hour? I have all 4 books of the Twilight Saga in Russian on my shelf, but have not ventured to try to read them yet.
I tried a page and a half of The Little Prince today, reading the French version alongside, and it took me about 2 hours, plus I was exhausted. Hope you can show more progress! 1 person has voted this message useful |
