How are you doing? I really hope your cold is over. How far have you gotten with your Russian now? What materials are you using?

Hey Christina- I'm doing pretty well, thanks. Thank god that cold has passed and I'm back to normal. I started participating in the Six Week Challenge over on Twitter for French and am really enjoying it so far. I haven't done a whole lot of Russian lately besides input, but I will fix that asap. I can't wait to hear more about your trip to Ukraine. I will be checking your log frequently for details :)

Wow it's been awhile since I've written here. I'm still doing the six week challenge over on twitter (username:
oylem_goylem) and getting a fair amount of French and Hebrew input. Russian-wise, I'm spending a lot of time
eavesdropping on my boyfriend's conversations and listening to a lot of Russian music. My man also got me this e
reader with tons of foreign books in the public domain already installed.

I'm currently reading "Les Catillinaires" by Amelie Northomb and watching this french show about prostitutes (the
name is currently escaping me.) My Hebrew is making a lot of improvement, which is exciting. I do still need to
work more on my Russian.

I decided to go back to school and get my masters in Speech Pathlogy. This Summer and Fall I'll be returning to junior college to complete some requirements. I am 90% sure that I'll have space in my schedule to take a 3rd year French course. I have no idea what my level is now, but this course will give me extra motivation to step it up a bit.

I think that six week challenge is over. My total score was 117 hours for total time spent learning languages and 73.48 for French. I'm going to snoop around a bit on this site to see how others are keeping track of their hours. I found this to be highly motivating and I want to beat my last time.

OK so I've been doing pretty well but due to classes and work I'm going to have less free time and my M.S.
program would like me to learn Spanish and American Sign Language. Also, I need to learn conversational
Russian asap because many of my boyfriend's older friends don't speak English and I'm becoming frustrated at
my inability to communicate adequately. French and Hebrew just need constant refining and practice.

Although the M.S. program requires knowledge of Spanish, I think I will put it off or at least avoid speaking and
listening until I reach advanced fluency in French. I really want to have advanced skills in French so I don't get
confused while learning Spanish.

The goals for this year have been slightly tweaked:

Advanced Fluency in Hebrew
Advanced Fluency in listening and reading in French
Basic Fluency in writing and speaking in French
Conversational in Russian
test out of first year in American Sign Language

now I just need to figure out the best way to organize my time.

You have no idea how envious I am about the Russian boyfriend angle. Wrong timing for me I am afraid, what with being married and all :-).

I cannot do anything for you in American sign language, but let me know if there is anything I can help you with when you start doing Spanish.

Good luck onwards!

Thank you Cristina. I probably would have postponed Russian until mastering French if I didn't manage to
acquire an awesome Russian guy. He is encouraging, but doesn't really believe that someone can learn Russian
without spending a long time in the country.

I actually just had an idea. It looks like I managed to put in 117 hours for the six week challenge that just
happened over on twitter. I think my next goal (starting tomorrow) will be to double my six week challenge
score. I also think that I will make it more fun by not telling my boyfriend or any of his friends and family that I
have been studying intensively and I'll put together a gathering where I'll be the only English speaker and I'll just
start speaking to them in Russian like nothing has happened.

I bet my spoken Russian will still be bad, but they seem to wholeheartedly believe that even learning to
understand Russian out of country is impossible. I'll review pimsleur and MT, watch a whole lot of TV, listen to
music, and try L-R or something like it. also will be using anki like a madwoman. haha I'm feeling devious!

O.K. that enthusiasm did not last so long unfortunately with work and summer school going on. I believe that
there is another six week challenge coming up next month which will be perfect timing for me. In the meantime,
Ive been thinking about how to make my life more Russian and French, which is the successful strategy I used to
get fluent in Hebrew.

I currently consider myself nearing fluency in French. There are still tons of gaps I need to fill in, for example, I
hate writing and I dont get enough speaking practice. Im trying to rally some of my friends to attend a Bastille
day party with me, but they are not interested. I must meet some cool French speaking people in my area.

As for Russian, I joined vkontakte.ru and there are tons of awesome videos and music on there. I am kind of
embarrassed to say that I have no friends on there except for the person who invited me, but when I get more
time I plan to search for English or Hebrew learners on there and try to arrange a language exchange. It would
be great to build up a larger Russian social network because that helps enormously
